Since I'm from Tennessee , I see more Gatlinburg fire coverage . 8 was just thinking that there are probably a few BOLs that are now ash. you think that being on your own in the mountains will make you safe, but mother nature has her own ideas.

Not familiar with most of your geography so please dont misunderstand my comments , but can you ot have a mountain BOL above the treeline? When I visited the Rockies I noted that many mountainous regions did not appear to be havily forested??

A little common sense helps too. Like clearing close to your structure, using fire resistant materials, etc. I wouldn't evacuate here if the whole area was on fire. I'm pretty confident about the fire resistance here, and would rather stay and put out anything that did start to catch.

The smokies are not high enough to clear the tree line. These are one of the oldest mountain ranges on the planet. Once they were as high as the Rockies, but with millions of years of erosion now they are forested completely.

Depending on where you are timberline could be anywhere from 5,000 - 10,000 +/- feet. Further north and the treeline is usually lower. Where I lived in Alaska it was around 1,000 feet.
My ranch here is 5,000 feet at the house and timberline around here is 6,000 - 7,000 feet. The problem with trying to live above timberline in most areas is the harsh winters; deep snow, cold temps and high winds are common.
Even here at my elevation I have 2' of snow on the ground now and another foot expected for tomorrow.
My ranch is a mix of thick stands of timber and open mountain meadows. Both of which cover anywhere from a few acres is size to several square miles.
Fires are always a concern for me. Several years ago a grass fire blew through a corner of the ranch and burned about a half mile of fencing before it burned itself out.
The forest service dips water out of my pond with helicopter's when there's a fire in the area.

don't get forest fires here, but sometimes a walker drops a cigarette butt on the moors and sets the bracken alight, that can result in a big fire.
When you said walker, I cracked up. That's what they call the zombies on The Walking Dead. I can see them walking around smoking a cigatette.

I don't watch that particular programme, I think its only available here by subscription channel and i'm a tight git!!:p

Don't sweat it, the show has really gone down hill recently. It was the highest rated series for a long time, but now with the storyline changing its ratings plummeted. They killed off two main characters and changed the dynamics of it. It was about the only show I really tried to watch consistently. Damned sorry writers.......

its probably not something I would watch anyway, I don't believe in zombies as in the walking dead anyway. I prefer stuff like nature programmes with David Attenborough, anything with Ray Mears in it, I'll even watch Bear Grylls(sometimes) just to see what stupid things he does, at the moment i'm into "Building Alaska" and the "mountain man" shows.

Carol and Daryl are my two favourite characters but I too have gone off the shows its just pure unnecessary gratuitous violence now since the Negan character was introduced.

I haven't had TV for over a year now but I do miss the Mountain Man series. I'm very familiar with where a couple of the characters are. I used to live and trap in the same areas.
I plan to get satellite TV up here as soon as I can get the roads open enough to get their truck in.

See if you can find 'naked and afraid' if you want stupid entertainment! I do like some of the outdoor survival series, but haven't made the effort to watch any consistently.

Honestly, I like news for current events, but could live without it otherwise. Even the news is better on line as you pick what interests you vs letting the network. Why am I paying 100 bucks a month for this crap? Oh, because that's better than hearing my wife if I cancel it....

I scrapped my Sky ( fox) Satellite subscription which was £40 a month ($55) All it is is 35 minutes of trailers, adverts, repeats of part of the previous section of the show, or repeating the same news every 15 minutes. I now use BT which is sadly very similar but only £7 ($10) a month but I do need the news channels.

This season's premiere pissed me off. I haven't watched since.

Mother Nature always has the upper hand, no matter how much you prep! While I plan to stay in place no matter what, I do have a bug out plan in case it is required. Also, in a SHTF situation, there may be people with all their cool guy gadgets trying to get a fire started and not knowing what to do.

While living in Alaska I took a trip to the North Slope and was well prepared, I just didn't expect to have to use it all! I went through 2 spare tires, my tire repair kit, half my first aid kit, spent 2 more nights out then my plan, 2 of my Bic lighters bit the dust, my fire striker broke, and used more duct tape then I thought possible! And I never even left the road in my truck!

As far as where this thread shifted to, Negan is a bully in charge of those who use the bully's strength as their own, Take out Negan and they will fall apart, but what do I know.

Agreed on taking out neagan. It will happen, but the writers will drag it out for a couple seasons. Just don't know if the ratings will survive long enough.

I posted, but I don't see it. The Walking Dead is different this year , but it is more pertinent as far as prepping goes. it's not the initial "disaster" that is going to be the worst part, it going to be later when man turn against man. (which is happening more on TWD this season). As far as the show tanking..... any other show on cable would give their left (insert body part) for their worst ratings. The Walking Dead is an excellent show for preppers. these people have no communication and have to forage for everything. watching it may give you some new ideas on survival .

The zombies have been easily dispatched for some time now. The show has been about the man vs man for several seasons. I agree there's stuff you can learn from it for use in a real survival situation, but for me it's mostly just entertainment. You're right about even with its drop in ratings, it still makes a ton of money for the network. From the beginning on this show no character has been off limits to being killed, so change is part of what has kept it interesting. Still, for me, seeing Rick turn into a submissive is just too much. Add the loss of Glenn and the hope of him and Maggie starting to repopulate the world and it changed the dynamics from optimism to dispair.

Oh, Rick will come back to being a bad ass. I agree on the man vs man has been going on for a while, but Negan has definitely kicked it up a notch. He is showing more of the limitations of man when it comes to the welfare of those in his charge.
