This is a great manual on mountaineering. It does a good job of explaining the type of snow. I'd also recommend getting with a good guide or one of the snow patrol guys who works at Ski resorts to help you identify the different snow packs on a mountain. Not only will it be good information, it will help prevent a fatal accident.
