One morning I got in my car, started the car and grabbed the shifter to find the shifter moving freely. I popped the hood and found this:

Looks like the grommet is gone and I checked online for a replacement from AutoZone. $30 they say. What? For a piece of rubber or plastic? Uh Uh I'll fix it my self somehow. I took the bolt off the shifter cable to have a look see:

Upon inspection I had an idea how I can fix it and cost me nothing. I grabbed my $4 HFT socket set and grabbed a 13/32" socket that fit the hole perfectly.

Seeing the groove in the bolt gave me an idea for a clip:

Drilled the socket out so the bolt can go in. Chrome Vanadium is a heck of a hard metal to cut so it took a while:

Drilling holes for the clip was a mother but I got it. Also found a large rubber gasket and drilled it out to fit the socket:

Tada! It's fixed! It ain't coming off.

I noticed then that my shifter has less slack in it so I guess the grommet was getting all worn out and broke.

If there is a will there is a way. You never throw something away because as soon as you do you have a need for it.

Thanks. I'm a retired mechanic and I do keep odds and ends instead of tossing them. You just never know.
