Welcome.

Some things to consider:

1) What zone are you in (agricultural zone).
2) Plant what you actually eat. If you don't eat squash, don't plant it.
3) Check with local farmers/home help stores' garden folks, to see which varieties grow best in your area and soil.
4) Plan your garden out, what goes where, based on sun needs, etc. (and close to a water spigot)
5) Make the garden out of site from the road/sidewalk
6) Have it fenced in (even if cheap fencing)
7) Get items to keep birds away
8) Don't be afraid to fail, learn from mistakes

'cause it's bound to happen sometimes, the failure part, one thing I learnd,if you have tomatoes, don't smoke around them, they catch some plant disease very easy, but when you succed it's so much fun :)
