Older iOS devices require update by TODAY (Nov 3)

Evidently, if you don't update your old Apple stuff, the internet may not work on them after today (Nov 3, 2019). After that, updating will become a bigger hassle (requiring a separate computer and backup/restore). So it might be worthwhile to do the update NOW, while you can still get it over the air.

I am not an Apple person, but we did find some unused old iPhones (a 5, and a 4) and an iPad (3rd generation) laying around that needed this update. We also found a old 5S, which apparently doesn't need an update, but we did one anyway.

Ah yes, Apple. First the make every update force your older devices to run slow and now they screw you if you don't install the software that forces your older devices to run slower.

A few years ago, someone told me it is important to turn off your computer when you are done using it. Something about helping with updates, etc. I don't know. I would just leave my computer on, but since then I turn it off when I am getting ready to go to bed.

My daughter recently told me that about my phone, when it was acting kind of goofy. Evidently we should turn them off for 90 seconds and then back on every day. I am not sure about all of that, but I have started doing that. As soon as I did it, it started working again. I was having a hard time with messages not going through to everyone.

Ignoring the exceptionally rare power failure around here, all my computers run 24x7 for years and years. But I run Linux, which doesn't get itself tied up in knots like Windows. Nor does it need to reboot 5 bazillion times just to implement a simple update like Windows does. Not only does Windows seem to need rebooting frequently, but it also seems to need a complete wipe and reinstallation of the operating system periodically.

For Windows, I agree that it should be rebooted routinely. Not necessarily daily, depending on how long ago you last reinstalled the OS - but pretty frequently (at least once a week typically). This is actually harder on your computers components than just leaving it running all the time, but Windows (the software) just doesn't run cleanly enough to be left up for long periods without a reboot. Not that you could leave it up and running for long periods anyway - with all the patches that are issued, and the frequent need to reboot after a patch is installed. Of course there will be some examples of a Windows computer that runs for long periods, but for most people, Windows is a chronic reboot-a-holic.

All of my computers go into sleep mode after 30 minutes of inactivity and wake up when needed. But they are all disconnected from power twice a year so I can blow the dust out of them. I can't imagine what the inside of a computer that has been running 24/7 for years and years would look like on the inside.

We don't leave ours running. We turn them on when we need them and off when we are done. The desk top may get used twice a month if we need to print something. The kids computer gets turned off when her school work is done or she would spend all day on it.

I don't know how true this is today but when I was running Windows if you kept it on for about 30 days it would lock up due to memory overflow issues. If memory is not purged and the software doesn't clear the memory it uses it will run out of "usable" memory and lockup. Turning the computer off (hard reboot) clears all the memory. When I write software I make sure all the memory used is freed as the program shuts down. This is supposed to be done by the OS but I started writing software back before the time of DOS 2.

I run servers so that my (remote) family members can watch movies, listen to audio, read eBooks, access our personally hosted cloud, etc. So computers have to remain up and running to support that. The desktops (the Linux ones) could be turned off, but why? The Windows ones (the wife still uses that OS) are left running too, and rebooted as needed.

I'll let you know. My first generation iPad running IOS 5.1.1 is showing no updates available, Ill see if it connects to the internet in a day or so. (Current IOS is 13.2)

I set up a new iPad for a lady yesterday and she has a really, really old iPhone. It said there was an update but her phone doesn't have enough memory to load it. She will not get rid of her old phone because she has over a thousand pictures on it. A lot of the pictures are of her son and husband and they are both dead now. I'll transfer the pics to her iPad after she gets it replaced. The location function does not work on the new one. It shows the location as the middle of the South Atlantic Ocean.

Joking aside - make sure her pictures get backed up. The thing with digital pictures is you can have thousands of them, and then a second later, have none.

My phone always has me as being in Las Vegas Nevada. I've never been there but aparently my phone thinks it is.
