Power systems: Weak power grid fluctuations can occur.
Minor impact on satellite operations possible.
Migratory animals are affected at G1 and higher levels; aurora is commonly visible at high latitudes (northern Michigan and Maine).

I'm not sure of all the classes of solar flares. But a G class is much less severe than an M class, which is much less Severe than an X class. The X class can wreck havoc on a lot of stuff. A high numbered class could be compared to the Carrington event from back in the 1800 that set telegraph wires on fire here on earth when it hit.

What absolutely amazes me is knowing how fragile current technology is, and how vulnerable it is to something like a naturally occurring event such as the Carrington, yet our entire way of life is built with little to no precautions in place to minimize it.

I suspect that a SHTF of the Carrington kind will be an equal opportunity event for most people. True, some of core America will fare better for a time, but the Left, Right, and Middle will all suffer horribly and millions will die. A reset may not play out in the way we'd like; thousands of years of human history have proven that "Man will dominate man to his own injury."

What ticks me off is that with a bit of forethought, a sprinkle of genius, a generous helping of engineering, and a side of common sense...much suffering could be avoided, Carrington-wise.

Or have your life set-up now so you don't need electricity. One of my favorite books is, "My Rugged Years". It is an account of a young man who came to Alaska in about 1927 and works mining claims. What is interesting is he never knew there was a depression, he never knew there was WW-II until someone new to Alaska told him. The lesson all that hell happened, and he never even knew it. His life was isolated from those bad events.

When the 9-11 twin tower happened for most people.......it happened for me on Sept. 20'th as that was the very first I knew of that event. I was guiding two hunters over near the Canadian/Alaskan border, it was a fly-in hunt. We flew in on Sept. 9'th. for a two moose and two grizzly bear hunt.

I agree. Except for the internet, my custom-built home is designed like it is 1856, and can (and has, many times) function extremely well totally off-grid. Grizzly Adams himself would approve, lololol.

But that isn't the problem... PEOPLE are the problem. Unless I relocated to the remotest part of Alaska or Northern Canada, hiding here is just buying time, even though I live in a Federally recognized "wilderness area."

Much of the "1st world" has large urban centers that depend on outside sources for sustenance. The approach of starvation will be the primary cause of the phenomenon known nowadays as The Zombie Apocalypse. Many a civilization before the current one has ended when its urban centers collapsed.
