saw that vid a moment ago..absolutly,those in power would mis-use that app to their favor..
I saw where Putin allready changes the coordinates on gps where he travels, throwing off the accuracy of anyone targeting him. The article said ships gps were showing them several miles inland. If someone can design a system then someone can hack it.

never trust technology, if it can go wrong it will go wrong, either accidentally or on purpose, the old ways are the best.
I love technology and really don’t want to have to ever live without it. That being said, I do know how to read a map and a compass. I think those kinds of skills should be taught in public schools vs all the crap they waste time on.

When I worked for a major oil company in the Arctic I installed GPS tracking devices on a large number of vehicles and equipment. It wasn't uncommon to have reports of some heavy equipment traveling 150 mph 30 miles offshore on the sea ice. No, I don't completly trust technology.

However, I clearly did not explain my concerns , Yes map and compass is first and foremost. but my concern is a scenario where we are bugging in or out only to find all of the traffic is maliciously being diverted into choke points in an effort to prevent people moving to safety. I think many of us have plotted routes that avoid using main roads but there are some in the bigger states whose primary method of movement is still going to be a vehicle.

if you have paper maps and know your area well you will know where all the choke points are and will avoid them, we don't need technology for that. oh and Google isn't trusted this side of the pond and isn't used if possible.

I for one have both vehicular and cycle / pedestrian bug in routes planned just in case, Why ? because I saw the pictures from H Andrew, H Katrina and 911 when entire populations try to get out of town in a panic at the same time.

Yeah, if you didn’t leave early enough in Fla. then you could be trapped on a highway during the storm. Bugging in became a much safer option. Of course with the fluidity of a storms track you really didn’t know exactly where a storm would hit until a few hours beforehand so it’s a guessing game on wether you need to bug out or not.

bugging out depends very much on where one lives, in a city where the majority decide to leave you probably wont get any further that the main highway which will turn into a giant parking lot.
and where are they all going to? just leaving and hoping to find somewhere "safe" is a mugs game.

I know when we have someone new coming to us that uses GPS, the map app has them coming into us the long way. Since I can see the interconnect from our gate I know when they come, if expected.
There are still patchy areas for google maps but it improves every year. I trust it 99% of the time. Real time crash detection and rerouting around it alone has saved me loads of time. I believe as long as technology is around that helps make our lives easier then it should be embraced. That being said, still knowing how to use a compass and map is a wise thing.

I have been warned not to use Google as it spies on us, they all spy on us but google is the worst.
There is no doubt that google, Facebook, amazon and many others collect data about you and everyone else and use it and sell it to others. It is the price of using electronics. I guarantee that just by being on this conservative prepper forum you are on lists being watched too. There is no such thing as privacy anymore. I’m not doing anything criminal, pay my taxes fairly, and am not a far right or far left wacko so I don’t really worry about it. The only good thing I can say from it is adds that ‘magically’ appear on your browser are tailored to suit your interests vs being some random crap your not interested in.

Since I'm Indianapolis right now I've had to depend on GPS to get around. Without GPS I'd be more lost than I am now. In big cities like this they are growing so fast that paper maps would be almost useless.
I'll be glad to get back home to the mountains tonight, but I'm not looking forward to being stuffed in an airplane for 8 hours. I hope that it's a long time before I have to see another big city.

I have driven around the EU so long now, I can get to London, Madrid, Zagreb, Budapest, Stockholm, Oslo, Berlin or many other places without maps or GPS. I still have my maps from the 80's and will send my Smartphone on a long trip, (just to screw with those following me) with a helium balloon. No telling where it will land...GP

That’s really cool that you can easily visit so many different places and cultures.

meaning me bigpaul? just cities. I could find the rapids for white water in Slovenia, forests of curvy motorcycle roads in the Provence of France, the waterfalls of Croatia in the National parks and even my way to Nottingham Castle and the oldest Inn underneath it, where the Crusaders stayed on the way to Jerusalem! GP

Well, it was mostly work, trucks and busses from Spain to Poland and from Bosnia to Wales. But, with a motorbike and car, I drove to visit lots of places on vacation also. Sweden and Norway, Austria, Switzerland, Serbia, Bosnia, France, BeNeLux and Germany was trucking, Poland, Croatia, Italy, Spain and GB Truck and Bus, the rest was motorbike and car. I drove 24 states, from Texas up to Canada, across to NYC, down to Florida and back to TX with a flatbed 57 & 1/2 feet long. With a Freightliner pulling the trailer, I could do 52 tonnes at 26 meters long...I kinda like driving. The main idea was, I can still get there without the GPS or maps...Gary
