The term "redneck" originated in the early 1900's in West Virginia. It was a name given to striking coal miners who wore red bandanas to identify themselves! I believe it had to do with miners going into neighboring towns to shop! I would have to research the details, but this is the origin of the term "redneck"!

In other part of the country, farm labors where called red necks because of sun burn from having short hair in sun all day.
This may have come later, in late sixties we where call rednecks as farm worker & it was not derogatory term, just a label like cowboy or rancher.
Later it became the name for ignorant & dumb actions, by drunk white people, mostly male, but not always male.
The redneck slogan "Hold my beer" or "Watch this here".

Just so you know rednecks and hillbillies are completely different animals.
There was a dating show that mismatched girl from the country with guy from the city.
This guy who never left New York City was flew to Louisiana & he called the River Rats, "Hillbillies.
Rednecks, Hillbillies & River rats All have sharp knives' & guns, hunt, butcher & cook wild & tame games.
Garden & forge, build a fire from next to nothing, in the rain.
So it gets confessing after a while, if you have lived in the city all your life.
