I HAVE RUN A FORUM IN THE PAST AND IF YOU ALLOW ROBOTS FREE RANGE ON YOUR FORUM,,, THEY WILL RUN UP THE COST OF HAVING THE FORUM,,,,, THIS IS A WELL ESTABLISHED FORUM WITH A LOT OF MEMBERS,,, WE DON'T NEED THE ROBOTS THEY RUN UP THE PAGE VIEW COUNT INCREASING THE COST OF THE FORUM,,,,,,,,,,, BLOCK THEM ALL AND COST WILL COME DOWN

THERE HAVE BEEN 54 ROBOTS ON HERE IN THE LAST HOUR AND THEY WILL LOOK AT MANY PAGES BEFORE THEY LEAVE,,,,,, THOSE 54 MOST LIKELY LOOKED AT 2000 PAGES WHILE THEY WERE HERE,,,, DO THE MATH IN A MONTH THAT IS A CHIT LOAD OF PAGES THAT THE FORUM IS PAYING FOR NEEDLESSLY

I am a technological novice so can you explain a little? Why would robots want to read web pages? Is this like an AI or Chinese or government bots looking for info on people?

And as @Arcticdude asked, how do you know?

they show up on all forums looking to see if we are worth advertising on,,, yup this is where all the ads come from

Most of those are from search engines. That is how search engines search the web. If they don't want search engines to know what content is on the site, they can put a "no robot' meta tag on the pages. That won't stop the nefarious robots however.
