Came across this and thought it was fascinating that something like this survived so long. I have not browsed the articles but thought folks would find it interesting and wanted to link before I lost it. I know how I am! :) Linking the DuckDuckGo search. You can go to the images page to see more or pick an article from your choice of sites!

We studied Ancient Romans with children and making mosaics with small paper squares to create their own was one of our projects. Some children did a great job with these.

What I always wonder is what happened that caused this or any mosaic to be covered up. We know there were volcanoes and other things that happened that probably caused so much death and destruction that areas were just completely started anew into other things, like vineyards.

I wondered the same thing, but still have not read any of the articles. This looks to be only under a few feet of earth, that is it. Does not look like any visible ‘structure’ ruins in any of them. Nothing that looks like it was inside a building.

That is a pretty cool find!

Whenever I see some of the wonderful artifacts of the once thriving Roman culture, it often has me wondering what people some 2,000 years from now will wonder about the American artifacts that they might uncover.
