40 million I doubt that,,,,I wonder how much bunker space the USA has,,,and how many bunkers are out there in private hands,,,I would say it is a big number

oh,but they do "practise"....just sent a while ago stuff to Alakurtti 50klicks or so from my border enough stuff to arm a division or two..and they tend to take those bunkers quite seriously...

The Federal Government bunkers today are far fewer than most think, sure we have them for Command and Control plus Continuity for the Government but for the Citizens, none. the Civil Defense shelters waned out in the mid 80s, inventory and mass distribution CD goods ended in around 1977. As far as the Citizens go today, it's up to them and them alone and private shelters are fewer than most think. Back in the heyday 1965 the DCD only built 1000 shelters up to that year (far fewer than most realize) Some smaller communities and cities budgeted for shelters (hospitals, first responder's and local government) with some getting help from the Feds, others taken the basements in libraries and multi story buildings etc.. turning them into fallout shelters for the community. Today we have far more storm shelters than fallout shelters that's totally different critters.
