You are at work, the store, what ever. Your car has been destroyed but you CAN retrieve anything in it. Whats next ? What do you have ? Stay or leave ? I would like to now what you guys an gals have with you, on your person, are you ready for such an event ? What are YOU going to do. Oh wait, you are 15 miles from home. There is some looting going on, people are getting restless.

All my vehicles have a certain amount of supplies (food, water, light, clothes, hand gun on my person) I would immediately start moving out, the longer one stays the more hostile the environment becomes, within 24hrs curfew would be put in place, NG would move in in 36hrs, within 5 days looter would devolve to the area at night. Unlike other situations (total collapse) traveling by night in the stricken areas would not be wise, so immediately moving out would be the most feasible option (take advantage of the confusion and shock and get the hell out)

Well there is no doubt you are getting home. Good answer !

first of all.due to my moms health.i hope she's at home at time.on acount she'd slow me down.if i have a bob on hand,id grab it right off and put it on.then taake a quiek look for any thing else i need while thinking of best route to take home.and head for it.but if mom is with me.id have ta think of some thing that works for her when it comes to getting from point a to point b.

That's a bad situation Jim, certainly no easy answers, with the many obstacles anything with wheels for mobility would create challenges due to the debris field, perhaps keeping a foldable walker w/seating in the vehicle.

Well it is hard for me to think along these lines since I'm in MN and no earthquake is bound to destroy my car here (if it does then I'm much worse off than I could possibly imagine) but if SHTF while I'm at work I' m in a world of hurt being 15-25miles from my car (I commute by bus the last leg of my daily each way 55 mile commute). If bus service is running I high-tail it outta town ASAP but if not then I'm hoofin it. I can grab food stuffs and water outta my desk. If I ever figure out how to legally bring my carry gun to work I'd have that but otherwise I'm problably just SOL! This is something I REALLY need to work on. I'm good from home but otherwise I'm pretty much dead meat!

Something to think about huh, maybe keep some tennis shoes at work.

That's a tough one, I am on board with Maverick

there is a walker with a seat in vehicale and a basket at all times.but where to go is the queston

If it's 15 miles by road, then I'm cutting cross country and slicing that distance by a third to start with. Otherwise, it's flat 15 miles, either way, I'm gone as soon as I get my stuff out of the truck. Out of the truck will come the Get My Butt Home Bag, the rifle, my dog, and whatever else may be in there at the time, but if I'm in the truck, those 3 are in there with me. Stay off the blacktop as much as possible, avoid the gatherings of people, I don't give a good rat's behind who's doing what to whom at that point. Our family has a rough idea of routes to and from town to take during different seasons and if someone is at home and they are able, they'll be coming to meet me cross country. Can't beat 4 hoof drive.

grab my get home bag from my truck, grab any extra water bottles that i have in my truck. and start walking home. i will try to contact my wife, and hope she is home. i have a walkie talkie in my truck and i hope my wife remembers to get hers from her bag, and i will try to keep trying to contact her. i will get on a road that will get me in a straight line to my home, so the radios can have a better chance of getting signal. i can walk an average of 2-3 miles an hour, if i take my time, but if i want to get in a hurry, i can walk maybe 3-4 miles an hour. so i might be able to get home in about 5-6 hours, with some periodical breaks in between. my get home bag has enough items to last me a day or so. i have a rifle in my truck, and i dont know if i would bring that with me while i am walking to my house by myself. unless i know if other people will be walking with me, to at least half way or more, i might consider taking it with me, or if i am walking in the night, which i might hold off, unless i am with other pople.

if mom is at home..yes i will head home..but if she's with me,she can handle going a certain distance at a time..

Jim, Since I am unfamiliar with your Mom's health and limitations then perhaps the only alternative would be to find a hospital with much activity, undamaged FD and camp on the premises, keep a map with such locations in your B.O.B. At the very least you should get marginal security Vs being in the open. Being from Texas myself I know the heat can be hell, anyone walking the flats in Texas in poor health against the backdrop of sun/heat and humidity wouldn't be very wise. I totally understand your concern.

if we're in the town i live in.15-20 miles to the nearest one..but if we're in town..heading home might be best.6 miles that way..(BUT) like colt said to begin with.15 miles from home.that'd put us 2-4 miles to one in one direction.10-12 miles to another.20 to another..aint life intresting? LOL

P.S. still working on my bob.so hopefully i'll have it ready before shtf

emergecy meds for me only.but mom has daily meds she take.so thats some thing i gotta think of..

If you don't already jim, make sure to put several doses of her medicines in the bob so you have them, I'd try for a week's worth if you can manage it.
Might be a good idea to start carrying a bicycle, hit the pavement when you can, walk around debris.
