With Bert The Turtle in 1951 many of us grew up in the 'Duck and Cover' era remembering the 'Fallout Shelter' signs. The government instilled in our minds to be prepared so in the 50s and 60s it was big business building and supplying/stocking bomb shelters today however is different, the government now deems it unnecessary (evil) today the government wants us to rely on them not self-reliance.

I can remember when we moved away from our family core, the real estate agent made sure that if the house being shown had a bomb shelter, it was shown to us. The house my parents ended up buying has a nice shelter that we used as a root/storm cellar for years. I have no clue what she's got in there now.

I remember the "duck and cover" drills for nuclear attack. We also trained for nuclear attack in the army... of course they could never figure out what direction we should point our feet!

I actually looked for a house here in Oklahoma with a basement, but that was a huge fail....

For a state that has a ton of Tornados, why do we not have basements?!?!?

Cost? Around here a lot of the old houses had a separate root/storm cellar away from the house just in case the house collapsed, that way they wouldn't be trapped.

Well storm shelters are not normal here either... We prefer to be on the porch when the tornados come!

Yeah, if I have my druthers, I'll be sitting out on the porch watching the storm come in.

some of us texans simply get out there and ride them rascals for the sheer fun of it..then head for shelter..lol

Have you ever noticed that anything that the government is involved in, gets screwed up? Our forefathers saw this and said less government is better government. It is in almost everything that they wrote. The lives of the people should be in the hands of the people! I don't care what kind of label they put on independent thinkers, "Wacko Preppers", etc? But we are just that! "Independent Thinkers." We're not sheep and we won't be brain washed by the media nor those "who think" they are in power. We calmly go about our business and say "Thank you for leaving us the h##l alone".
