Lion got the high ground, they are smart extremely fast and powerful, they are very good at ambushing. Least they spotted it, damn lucky, the cat would have waited until the first person passed than pounced the one in the back (generally)

Would a caliber as small as a 9mm be able to stop one generally?

It's rare for a mountain lion to actually stalk people. Now if you have youngsters who wander the woods, I'd be concerned.

I've had predators on my property. Heck, once I remember while mowing out in the field, coyotes stalked & took a duck not 200 ft from me. Saw the whole thing. What can you do about it? Yup, was mowing to knock down the grass so I could see predators & prevent stalking. Had I had a shotgun with me, I'd more likely kill more ducks than hit the coyote. But I don't fault predators for doing what they were made to do.

A friend chose to trap/kill a number of bobcats because they were decimating his flock. OK, when it's serious and repetitive, you have to do something. Good luck.
