I've lived in this state a few times. When in 3rd grade in Newport News VA, and I don't remember a lot about it. I do know we did visit Williamsburg with my dad's mom and family and it was neat.
And I lived in Lynchburg after being an adult. I liked it. We rented the top floor of an old house, and he was a radio station manager and on air guy. What was fun is that I did the on air remote board for him while he took the mike out into the Thomas Roads Baptist Church for the Sunday live broadcast. This was with Jerry Falwell, and the raising funds for Liberty University and complex. I also learned how to drive a stick shift car on those rolling hills.
The place we lived was 653 Leesville RD - and now at the end of that road is Liberty University and complex.
I also remember the old houses, and the effect of FFV's First Family of Virginia (VA Royalty). And how they could trace their ancestors back to the Mayflower and into England, etc.
And some of the old houses had become craft shops and each room was a persons store for antiques and handmade stuff.
I almost forgot, We were invited to a totally black church, (this little southern gal's first time) and we went. The people were so beautiful, and the little babies, especially the little girls, were so dressed up they looked like dolls. But the enthusiasm in the music was something I had never hear before (White Baptist churches I had been to were very restrained). That church let loose with music and it just got in your bones. It was wonderful, and they were all very welcoming.
Later on, we lived in Charlottesville VA. In the basement apartment and it was okay. He was still a radio manager (to get a raise in radio you moved to a different station). We were living there when "The Waltons" came on TV. Charlottesville went crazy during that time. They loved it.
And I remember in the spring Charlottesville had Dogwood Festivals. They had so many Dogwood trees around there. It was beautiful.
We would also go talk to a chief engineer of a radio station in Crozet VA. A small little town I remember we did the whole day of on air one Thanksgiving so all the regular on air people could be with their families. That is a beautiful town.
And the last time was Blacksburg VA when my youngest daughter was being asked to come from 8th grade to college there in a special program. That college was amazing, and I would have love to have gone myself. It sounded like a good program, scholarships to pay for it, etc. I think that school may have changed demographics since about 1990s or so.
But if you have the time, go to Virginia and get off the interstate and see the rolling hills and old farms, and charming towns.
What are you memories of Virgiina?
