So we have this special post in the new house we're building, and it needs a name. 😂

The story behind this is that when I was designing the house, I thought it would be neat to have a raw cedar post along this beam. Structurally it wasn't necessary, but I wanted that natural look indoors. So when we went over things with the Amish crew who did the framing and exterior work, we asked if we could buy a raw cedar post from them, maybe something with a couple stubs from branches, so I could hang quirky things from it. I think they really like the idea, because they sent their guy out in the woods and he came back with this! They had me go down to their shop and we decided what branches to cut, and what to keep. He's quite the studly post!

They waited until some of the interior work was done before bringing him out and installing him. But now he's up, he looks fantastic - and he needs a name! lol

We're trying to come up with some sort of house guardian-type name, or a Norse or Celtic tree god, something like that. We've toyed with the name Heimdahl, but still not sure of it.

What do you guys think? What names would you come up with?

I'm going to throw out 2 names.

"Thor's Oak" - The central tree in the great lodge in Valhalla.

I see antlers and deer eyes in the picture.

"Eikþyrnir" is a sacred Norse deer. See KSD: Antlers & Stag — Mimisbrunnr.info: Developments in Ancient Germanic Studies
Excerpt:

The royal hall of Heorot also sees something of a mirror image in the Old Norse record in Valhalla (Old Norse Valhǫll), an afterlife location in Norse mythology ruled over by the god Odin (Old Norse Óðinn). This hall is also associated with a stag named Eikþyrnir, which is in turn associated with the central sacred tree, around which all things exist in Norse myth. The name Eikþyrnir appears to be a compound meaning ‘oak-thorn’, a fitting reference to antlers. The deer’s antlers have something of a cosmic function: According to Gylfaginning, the stag chews the leaves of the central sacred tree, and water drips from the antlers to form into numerous rivers throughout the worlds (Faulkes 1995 [1987]: 33).

Eikþyrnir is not the only stag associated with the sacred tree in the Old Norse record. The eddic poem Grímnismál and Gyflaginning mention four stags who dwell and feed within the boughs of the tree. These creatures are among many others that live among the immense roots and branches of the tree. Given the context of stags elsewhere in the ancient Germanic record, it’s tempting to consider these four stags together in the highest boughs as the tree’s own crown of antlers.

Nimloth the white tree of Gondor. Treebeard, of Fangorn Forest. Treebeard was an Ent. Info easily accessed on Wikipedia. Also on Wikipedia,
In J. R. R. Tolkien's legendarium, the Two Trees of Valinor are Telperion and Laurelin, the Silver Tree and the Gold Tree, which brought light to Valinor, a paradisiacal realm also known as the Undying Lands where angelic beings lived. The Two Trees were apparently of enormous stature, and exuded dew that was a pure and magical light in liquid form. They were destroyed by the evil beings Ungoliant and Melkor, but their last flower and fruit were made into the Moon and the Sun.

Commentators have seen mythic and Christian symbolism in the Two Trees; they have been called the most important symbols in the entire legendarium.
I like your Norse gods’ names idea @goshengirl The very first name you mentioned is a great one.

LOVE these suggestions! This is the kind of stuff we love.
We also considered Cernunnus (sp?)(Celtic god of the forest), and my husband was just wondering if there were any tree characters in the Narnia tales (will have to look that up).

Really like the stag association, too @zoomzoom. We have a lot of deer on the property, and a personal affinity as well.

From Norse Mythology:
The Norse universe consists of nine worlds. These worlds are only referenced a few times throughout the myths and are not specified, but are thought to be (in no particular order) Asgard, Vanaheimr (Vanaheim), Jötunheimr (Jotunheim), Niflheim, Muspelheim, Álfheimr (Alfheim), Svartálfaheimr (Svartalfheim), Niðavellir (Nidavellir), and Miðgarðr (Midgard) – which is our world.

These worlds are connected by a great ash tree named Yggdrasil, which runs through the centre of the universe. An eagle lives at the top of Yggdrasil, while the dragon Niðhöggr (Nidhogg) lives at the bottom and chews on its roots. The squirrel Ratatosk runs up and down Yggdrasil’s trunk, carrying messages between these two creatures – and they’re not particularly nice messages either.

I worked with a guy that had his house built around a live cedar tree. It was growing right out the roof in his great room. He also had a stream running through the room. It was spectacular.
He had a name for the tree but it was in Japanese and I don't remember what it was. That house cost a fortune back in the early 80s.
If we had a tree it would just be the dog's bathroom.

Absolutely beautiful. It reminds me of a banister my buddy put in one of his houses. He found a tree where the bank fell away and the tree kept growing. The banister just curved away at the bottom of the stairs. He also had a post with a couple of staubs though not as many or as large as yours.

I saw it and remembered an old song about the Alaskan gold rush:
By Frankie Lane;

I came to town to search for gold
And I brought with me a memory
And I seemed to hear the night wind cry
Go hang your dreams on the hanging tree
Your dreams of love that could never be
Hang your faded dreams on the hanging tree

I searched for gold
(At the hanging tree)
And I found my gold
(At the hanging tree)

And I found a girl
(And I found a girl)
Who loved just me
(And she loved just me)

And I wished that I could love her too
But I'd left my heart on the hanging tree
I'd left my heart with a memory
And a faded dream on the hanging tree

Now there were men who craved my gold
And they meant to take my gold from me
When a man is gone, he needs no gold
So they carried me to the hanging tree
To join my dreams and a memory
Yes, they carried me to the hanging tree

To really live, you must almost die
And it happened just that way with me
They took the gold and they set me free
And I walked away from the hanging tree
I walked away from the hanging tree

And my own true love
Oh yes, she walked with me
That's when I knew that the hanging tree
Was a tree of life, new life for me
A tree of hope, new hope for me
A tree of love, new love for me

The hanging tree
The hanging tree
The hanging tree

That was from Star Trek Voyager. Neelix told the story to a young girl. There was also a talking flame that tried to burn the tree and the girl threw talking water on the tree and fire. She killed the fire the little b*$%#. terrible, violent show! ;)

Goshen House has a good ring.

@Fireman13, I can't believe we didn't even think of something North American - thanks for the suggestion! Did a little digging on Roger Williams' book, and most likely the language is Narragansett - which is really interesting to me, because I have Narragansett ancestry (going way, way back).

The most recent native population in this particular area would be the Shawnee, but I couldn't find any good language sources there. Keezhik is "red cedar" in Ojibwe/Ojibway - that's pretty good, too.

We named the high spot where the house sits Crow Point, and the house is named The Nest. We have a lot of names throughout the place, I don't know why. It's just what we do. A connection, I guess.

Love all the historical and mythical information you all have come up with! You guys are awesome! 😀

I guess in the legends, Lori once transformed himself as a beautiful mare to lure Odin's horse away. It didn't go well for him - he got pregnant. 🤣
I haven't fully watched all the Thor/Loki movies (I don't even know what they're called), but I've seen enough pieces of them to not be able to separate the historic legends from the modern movies. I can't think of Loki without thinking of Hulk saying "Puny god." 😂 Plus Loki was nasty, and we have affection for our tree-post, lol.
