I am just starting to get into prepping and I was discussing with my girl prepping toiletries. I suggested stocking up on baby wipes instead of toilet paper. My thinking behind it is you can store more per sq inch. And they are sealed in the package to insure them staying fresh what are your ideas? What other items do you stock ?

Well, TP and wipes are certainly on the list. So is bar soap (as it lasts longer than liquid...though I realize many preppers make their own). Household cleaners are on my list (though good to know how to make your own home versions).
For the ladies....female products, of course. I'm not worried about too much else to stock up on, other than more health-related toiletries like creams, ointments, etc.

My gals are kind of spoiled with both, so we have to have both. Practicality wise, TP is cheaper, wipes are more space-saving, so it depends on which factor is more important. For me, I have plenty of storage, so not as big a deal.

Yeah I only think about storage space because mine is limited at my current residence. Multi purpose sponge bath with the wipes. Once I by a home and have land I will be good to go. How many gallons would e sufficient for a family of 3?

Gallons of ??? If you mean water, figure a gallon per day of drinking water, per person. You also need water for washing, etc., but this doesn't have to be the same quality (I store untreated rain water in barrels for this).

if you have gutters with drain spouts.then your already heading in the right direction for rain water.rain barrels and/or under ground water storage tanks.

What do you think would be more practical tp or wipes?
it is a luxury item it does depend on enviornment and climate though but most places have a good supply of paper -- what you do is crumple the paper then wet it... when it dries out you can crimple it a bit more , makes it less rigid.

None the less in the wild usually moses are abundant and sufficient, also potentially leaves. or just jump in the water and bathe if you are near a clean river..

diet can go a long way too.. remember rice and fibre promotes solid feces... nothing sucks more than diahreha or soft stools when you don't have paper.

None the less one roll of toilet paper should be enough for a month.

take what you use. It isn't an essential item. even a cloth you can wash will be more effective.

for a bug in hopefully you have a supply of toilet paper or paper towels (which can be used for injuries also if they are moisture wicking or as a tampon of sorts)

do you use baby whipes normally on your but? why would you choose them over your regular tp?

bear in mind some hand soaps (rather hand sanitizers.. i've had a chat on this with someone who will not let me say it is soap... because soap removes oils and stuff by clinging to it, while sanitizers can contain alchohol.. note that some alchohol sanitizers liquid hand washes etc.. can be used as a fuel source.

it is also used in things like napalm, molotovs etc.. in place of gasoline .. . not sure how that would be useful except in a mob attack though..

maybe for another topic but I'm not sure how incidenaries can be useful as a practical prepping tool.

not sure how many people want to clean their but with gasoline soaked rags and newspaper either though :)

the stuff can be dangerous.. Im not sure what traditional soap can be used for aside from breaking down oils... alcohol breaks down styrofoam which can add to napalm qualities.. actually soap and alcohol are similar.. I don't think a prepper can have enough of the stuff, I still don't get soap. Its only practical use is as a laxative imo, and you don't want to be lax imo. altough washing clothes without electricity is perhaps something preppers might want to brush up on.. and hand bar soap can be useful for that. good for the clothes not needed for the body.

In my head hand sanitizer is a better prepping agent than hand soap... it desanitizes.. and it is infection that you should be worried about water will clean buts but you want to remove the chance of infection and contamination to the body. in a shtf you will not smell your poop and proper poo disposal is a more important skill than whiping ones but.

even dirt and water will suffice to clean the anus.

but I think that most people use tp not baby whipes so I think this discussion would more so be what advantages to baby whipes have as a bum cleaner over top, and why is it not the norm to use babywhipes?

what I would be wondering are there good germs in the bum that you don't want to kill? like in the stomach.. what life in the rump should not be desanitized i.e. killed off?

in my head wet wipes will be better to stock because they will be harder to duplicate in a shortage.

supply and demand will continue even in social disorder.

I would have it very low priority.. personally I have little of each.. but it is more common to use tp imo but stock what you plan to use.

if water is short though inventive cleaning methods like wipes can be useful.. so overall I would get a basic supply of tp and a box or two of wipes with high alchohol content and that would be good. My bug in does not have a water shortage though so low water content is not a factor and I cannot realistically plan for a bugout of over a month unless I am buying or scavenging supplies, unless I have a vehicle, and I do not expect road access in major disorder.. travel by road will be dangerous. but I think prepping for localized disaster should come before calamity. localized disaster should not last more than a month or two so that is a good start to plan for.

I carry a pack of these everywhere I go:

And YES WilliamAshley, if you must know:rolleyes:, I do wipe my butt with them...after using TP. I have hemorrhoids and it's difficult to clean up down there. Leaving it dirty aggravates the hemorrhoids. (YOU ASKED!)

They are hypoallergenic, and don't smell like your typical baby wipes. In fact they almost have no smell at all. They are great for cleaning your hands or face or any other part of your body. In fact I have used them to take a "spit bath" on occasion.

I wear pants with cargo pockets and they fit perfectly in there.

I have a couple of packs stuffed in my BOB, along with regular TP. These are not in any way antiseptic or antibacterial, so I also have packs of antibacterial hand wipes.

ah sorry to hear that, I got a sunburn and sun blisters on my shoulders and need to put on a heavy ruck in a few days so I can identify with your anal problem.

luckily there is cream to stop sunburns... another potential important prepper tool... sunscreen. or a solid tan.

TP is absorbent wipes aren't. Each has its benefit. Tp takes less space if you remove the center cardboard roll out or simply smash them flat. It flattens out after that then, reseal them in ziplock freezer bags and, you have a simpler way to store that takes less space. Plus the bags are reusable and each can then be used for simple packing. Just grab and go. These also come in handy for moving they can be used to pack around and protect breakables.

I can only wish I knew it all. I have wipes at my bug in also, but no I don't carry them in my bugout bag, I have a small supply of alcohol and benzocaine wipes in my first aid kit, as well as extraply moisture absorbant paper towel 1 for every day of the bugout.

In all honestly though I'm not in the same environment most of you are, I have clean natural water sources that the risk of contamination fom bathing in is on polar opposites especially after shtf.

For most people TP is normal. No need to reinvent the wheel.

I'm not an "ASS" you are being rude, I'm sharing my opinion, and you are starting ad hominem attacks.

Yep..... your still an ASS !

^lol

Having a toddler,we stock both tp and wipes, but we also don't plan on bugging out except as a last resort. For bugging out,our choice would be wipes for the size factor and multiple uses.

Another thing we do,as I figure everyone will run out of either eventually if it's that long or big of a shtf event,is my wife keeps bags of used worn out clothes (especially cotton, like worn out t-shirts),washed and cut into usable sized strips. If needed to reuse, the strips can be washed and boiled to sanitized and can also be used for female "stuff" as well in a pinch. We just keep em in totes in the basement, cause ya never know.

I agree with wipes, but I would carry some TP too.
Hand sanitizer kills the germs but only moves the dirt around where as soap and water takes care of both the dirt and the germs.

Recently, in our supermarkets, they started selling 1000 sheet 2-ply TPs. I have started replacing my 300 sheet 2-ply TPs in stock with these since they take up less space.

There are coreless TPs in the supermarket and I noticed that they are cheaper than those with cores.
