Probably just me but there does appear to a quite a flurry of largest magnitude quakes recently
It seems that way but historically no
And here one on 2014 for 4 months of small and large EQ. To get an idea how common it is
They just get more press now days. Disasters sell, stability doesn't.It seems that way but historically no
Of interest to this thread........
I'm more worried about seismic activity near the Canary Islands. (Which I first thought was what we were talking about here). If that volcanic mass ever slides into the ocean we are going to have a hell of a day to go surfing on the east coast of the continental states.
I'm glad I live at 1400 ft above sea level. I lived in fla at about ten ft above for years. Who knows, after trump dismantles the EPA I may be beachfront again.....Aye Grand Canarias cracked volcano would also take out much of the southern part of the UK, Holland, Belgium and France.
yeah I am with you on this, for a tidal wave to reach me it has to get close to 600 miles inland, and unless that old fault running thru the Ohio valley down to Memphis suddenly goes active I don't care,,,,I feel sorry for those caught up in one but I can do nothing about itEarthquakes and tidal waves are the least of my worries. Unless the wave exceeds 5,000 feet and can go over several higher mountain ranges and travel 800 hundred miles inland.
I'd buy a surf board just in case....I'm at 320 feet and hoping the surge would only be 300 ft by the time it reaches the upper end of England

yes I think that is it,it is big enough that a massive quake could cut the US in half,,,,,and I am to close for comfort if that were to happenIzzat the New Madrid fault? if it is there is a great fictional novel about that fault.
These events have been going on for eons, nothing new or more frequent now. The big difference is in the past there was no one to notice. Now there's few non populated places in the world. The New Madrid Fault (or more properly the New Madrid Seismic Zone) has the potential to cause widespread catastrophic destruction in 8 states (Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee, Oklahoma and Mississippi) - far more widespread than any potential damage on the West Coast. The 1811-1812 New Madrid earthquakes rang church bells in Boston 1000 miles away. The hole that they opened up (now Reelfoot Lake) swallowed up the Mississippi River, which flowed backwards for 4 hours. Entire Indian villages just disappeared without a trace. Most of the catastrophic damage occurred in areas that were still wilderness at the time.
It still rumbles from time to time, some claim that we are still experiencing aftershocks from the 1811-1812 quakes. This is a map of earthquakes (more than 4000) recorded in the zone since 1974:
