have you tried various reastaurants, mainly fast food places? many times they get their deep fry oils in those blue plastic barrels with a screw on lid?
or you could ask your local farmer,if you know someone, if they have those and are willing to sell some?

you absolutely positively need "food grade" - "used" has to be guaranteed as having been used for a food purpose and nothing else >>>> any deviation and you can poison yourself even with the most rigorous soaking & cleaning possible ...

don't fool with this part of prepping !!!!!

Do you fill these with tap water to store? I have shop bought water (obviously not enough) and a rain barrel. Question is, can you fill ordinary water storage bottles with tap water or do you need food grade?

aren't they food grade what they sell in stores? those water bottles.
Yes, I’m talking about old water bottles, the big ones. After the seals broken can they be refilled with tap water for long term storage. As the food grade storage containers are like 15 quid.

you can buy cases of drinking water - you can store bulk tap water in 250 gallon IBC totes and 55 gallon "Blue Barrels" >>> but you should always have durable & eazy to carry 5/6/7 gallon water containers like the retail store Coleman or AquaTainer brands >> sooner or later you'll be needing to scavage water - if nothing else carry 5/10 gallons back from the emergency supply truck ....

I would stay away from the used containers. It’s just not worth the risk of contamination even when you wash them out. Has anyone considered an above ground pool? A 16’ round pool bought at the end of the season at Walmart can be had for 150.00. Not only is that a lot of water you could drink but it’s a lot of fun too. Just don’t use any sunscreen oil while swimming In it. I’m sure my Berkey filter would get the sunscreen out but would clogg the filters. Think outside the box for solutions that fill more than one need.

I hope I never have to depend on a water supply truck in my lifetime....
I strongly advise investing in a couple good water filters that have few moving parts and high capacity. Nothing out there is as important as safe drinking water.

Thanks. Not enough room for a pool. I’ve got a life straw, won’t last long though, will have a look at filters.

Do you use any additives to prolong the life of your water. I’ve been using the water bricks but don’t recommend them- the handles come off very easy

water bricks are a scam - too many poly seams and corners that are weak vulnerable points ...

you can bleach when you store the water and add more every year - or - treat when you use it ...

You can use tap water, it doesn't have any shorter life than bottled water, nothing in drinking water to go bad unless it was contaminated from the start. As long as the water is good and container is sealed, out of sunlight, the water will last your life time as long as it remains sealed in a dark place.

Great, that’s what I needed to hear

why would the water be used & replaced every week?
Because I have strange black stuff in my water and I don't think my landlords are going to be very receptive to looking in to it. I am going to have the water tested this week, but from my research it is either a rubber washer that is breaking down or bacteria feed on the iron/Manganese in the water.

I have iron and manganese in my well water. I got a filter that aerated and sends the water thru a sand/gravel medium and it stopped the rust stains in the toilet. It automatically backflushes it out every three days. I think that filter was about 700$. In the house I have a big berkey that sits on the counter and use a charcoal filter on the fridge. I don’t drink any water that hasn’t gone thru one of those two filters. I know I could but it’s clearer and has no mineraly taste when filtered.

Let me ask a more fundamental question. How is 50 or 250 gallons of water going to impact your prepping? You wrote that you don't have room for a pool. What will you eat? What can you grow? How many people surround you that want what you have?

Something is better than nothing. But I'm getting the impression that you are looking at moving from zero-survival to minimal-survival scenarios. Yes, an improvement, but far from where you should be.

Here is a comparison point. Water well. Rainwater collection & 1000's of gallons of storage. River/stream. Things that are renewable, large-scale water solutions. Just opening your mind to these options.

I have what I have and I’m grateful for that. Can’t afford a parcel of land near a stream or a well (although that would be nice) There is a stream and lake 10 min walk away and I have researched ways to clean the water if needed. I have enough food for 5 months - been collecting for about a year, all stuff I use weekly. So have been rotating it. Water, I agree is an issue, which is why I posed the question. I do have a yard, not massive but bigger than most. I do have a small paddling pool out there on sunny days but it would be covered in sycamore leaves/ seeds from next doors tree after a few days or destroyed by the dog. So not a long term solution. I also grow potatoes in bags. Not a preppers wet dream I know but probably a lot better off than any neighbours within a 5 mile radius.

I also feel that if your not in a situation that you want then start making a plan that will get you into a situation that you want. I’m not talking overnight, but start taking steps towards whatever goals you have.

any type of pool is providing grey water - it's not potable water - pool materials used are not food grade >>> in a SHTF think about making floor space inside to keep the water clear of debris - any water is better than none >> fill anything that will hold a drop
