Can't speak for any/all time periods but back when I was in the Marines, they had something called "80-day reservist" Basically, you're an inactive reservist who serves 80 days (the length of USMC boot camp). If something breaks out, active duty first, active reserves second then they call up the 80-day reservists.

As for age...

My son is in his early 20's & fit for service. I'm in my 60's. If they're reinstating the draft, I'm going to tell them to take me instead of him.

I've gone through USMC boot camp. Once you do that, you don't have to do any other boot camp ever again so I can just skip that step.

All I ask for is a ride to the battlefield (I'm not walking), a lawn chair, ammo, soft toilet paper and decent enough food that I don't get the runs. I'll bring my own rifle(s).

I have enough maturity to act rationally. I've been around the block enough that I won't take crap from anyone, especially someone that's shooting at me.

There would be some benefits for that. But I'm kind of the opinion that the government shouldn't have the authority to require everyone to serve unless there is an actual war. We have enough government in our lives, we don't need them requiring our young people to serve too...

they dont need to serve in the military but some basic training would do all of them good, bunch of fat lazy kids sitting in front of video games.

If I was called up now I would moat likely be assigned to weapons design development or production. I wouldn't be a good addition to physically demanding job but I have over a decade of experience on various military projects.

Yea, my forte is tech skills but if it was me or my son on the front line, I'd like the spot. After all, I did require a lawn chair so I'll be good.

Stop worrying about a draft. If WW3 starts in earnest, it's not going to matter how many people are in the service. The war will last less than a day.

If we get a conventional war run by the military industrial complex I hope enough people disagree to have a civil war right here.
If it goes nuclear or limited nuclear they may want my skills since I mainly guarded and assembled tactical nuclear weapons.. We had our own deuce and a half van to ride around in so no running up hills.

As far as the younger generation not being fit to fight that probably describes a lot of people but here in montana there are still some skilled hard working young people who hunt and fish and are used to hot and cold temps....... properly supplied could take on anyone.

I can't believe that we're even contemplating sending our young men off to be killed for some shythole country like Ukraine of all places. Why?!? It's so GD stupid that we'd even think about such a thing. Just say F NO.
Take a look at who's trying to start this war. Is there really anyone here who would be willing to send their sons or grandsons to die for Joe Biden, Zelinsky, the deep state, WEF, NATO, UN, democrats, RINOs? Ridiculous.
