The first legal bare knuckles match in 130 years will be held in Cheyenne, Wyoming on Saturday.
Proponents of bare knuckle boxing say it's actually safer than fighting with gloves because the matches are generally over very quickly and there is less accumulated brain damage.

Gloves were introduced to protect the boxers' hands, not their heads or bodies.

I am a boxing fan, although it really is a brutal sport. I’m not so sure I want to see anyone get bludgeoned bare fisted, but am sure it will get a lot of attention. I don’t like most sports for a number of reasons. First it takes too much time to follow most of them. Secondly, but close to first, it disturbs me how our society pays players massive amounts of money and treats them like royalty. Scientists trying to feed the world and cure cancer don’t get anywhere near the pay or recognition. Something seems screwy with this to me.

I will start to follow activly sport again when they introduce the old gladiator games, with period equipment..and puts criminals on the arena to fight each other ;)

I really don't see the "sport" in watching two idiots get up on a stage and beat the crap out of each other. But that's their choice. Many people seem to enjoy watching that kind of violence and the chance to see some blood spilled.

I really enjoyed fighting in local tough man competitions, and got in a few "biker brawls", little biker rally tough man events.

It was a serious good time. I feel like it's a modern continuation of stuff like the ancient Greek Pankration. Warrior skills. Silly, I know.

I still think about getting into some local MMA, or tough man stuff. But then I remember I was never very good, and now I'm old and not very good. So I don't do it.

You get my vote to support that concept.

I could appreciate boxing by considering it as part of a defensive repitoir.

People place a lot of stock in the Asian martial arts (and they should), but I will repeat something that my father told me as kid . . . and my later paramedic experience ultimately confirmed:

"Never...ever....under any circumstances underestimate what a really good boxer can do to you. I will tell you that there is often permanent brain damage after mixing it up with a real boxer......and that they can kill you if they want."

I was always prejudiced in favor of the Asian martial arts......but--as I've just said--my paramedic experience confirmed most (I'm tempted to say "all") of my father's claims.

I can't stand boxing as a sport.....but I like what it offers to a prepper, and how accessible it seems.

I hope this doesn't classify me as a hypocrite?

One can appreciate the skill and danger of something, without enjoying the results. All martial arts, which includes boxing, can be deadly when used by someone proficient in their use. I can appreciate a knife fighters ability without wanting to see someone gutted. Human to appreciate the talent but dislike the results. Kevin, you are just a a human.
