Do you shop at Dollar general?

Interesting. I noticed that not all Dollar Generals are created equal. There are about 4 of them in our closest bigger town. One in particular, I won't shop at. Was looking at some of the over the counter meds a few weeks ago, and they were all at expiration or expired. I go infrequently to buy their Dollar Deals. Those are $1 items only. So I can make sure I'm being charged correctly.

We have about 7 in close proximity to where other stores are at and Like @Amish Heart stated, One in particular, I won't stop at anymore.. Never what I want is found there and it is always a MESS...!!! When I see a dif in the pricing and they won't Honor the Shelf Price, "Take it Off and put it Back on the Shelf"...!! The Best way to Avoid all of that is Shop the Ad and Choose the ones You want, at Checkout put in Your Phone Number and the Coupons/Items that One picks , the Prices will 🐝 Honored..! At least that works 4Me... ☃️

Nope and I hope I never have to. I mentioned on here somewhere about my gut feeling on them a few years ago. They are trying to put the mom & pops out of business so these little towns of <1000 people will have no choice then I see them closing their doors so the citizens will be forced to move to 15 min. cities (my c0nspiracy the0ry).

Evil intentions as there is no economically sound reason to do so.

I have probably been in Dollar General 2, 3 or 4 times. Those around me are not really clean and in areas where I know there are lots of druggies. They don't really have things that I want, like I do at Dollar Tree.

Edit: its not a quick video to watch, and I am listening to most of it. If you listen to it and insert the word "Walmart" for almost every time you hear Dollar General, it is the same story, but with a different villain. These are similar things that we've heard about Walmart for years, that they put small businesses out of business, because they have great prices. Daughter has told me for years not to shop there, and I am not a big WM fan, but do go there occasionally. The first part of this video talks about how the prices on the shelf often do not coincide with the price at check out. This is a not uncommon experience of mine when I shop there. Is it everything? No, but it has happened quite a few times. And with the push of self checkout, what do you do, especially when the checkout lines are so long?

They are popping up everywhere around here. I will go into the couple that are close to me 2 or 3 times a year to see what they have going on. I've picked up a few things.

If everybody did what I do, that problem would go away real fast.
When they say: "Oh, that's the new price", I say: "well let me help you by getting that incorrect sticker off the shelf forya'; I'll be right back!"

I tend to be even more helpful: Whats your name, who is your manager, and who is the store manager. We need the right names so Ohio Consumer Protection can come and do an audit :p

I used to buy at Dollar General. I didn't discover being overcharged from the price on the shelf. But what turned me off about them was stopping there one day to pick up some paper plates. I grabbed one of the little bundles of paper plates & they charged me (as I remember it) almost $6.00. Normally I would have gotten those at Walmart for a lot cheaper per plate. I thought it was highway robbery, so I never went back.

Now I shop at Dollar Tree & I really like them. And mostly their items are $1.25 but they do have higher priced items. The higher prices are always on the items.

I "think" that I heard that Dollar General bought Dollar Tree a while back so I guess that I'll have to watch that close.

No. I did stop in back when the first one opened in the area, but the smell drove me away. Some sort of super strong, sickly sweet air freshener or detergent smell. Immediately makes me ill. I experienced the same thing in each of the three stores I stopped at, years ago, and have never gone back.
I hate how they're building them in rural areas all over the state. It has to be some sort of plot; there aren't enough people for the store to be sustainable but there they are. It probably is part of the conspiracy to cripple the rural areas, backed by big leftist money. Put the original little local stores out of business and provide only horrible junk in their place.

One thing I'll say something about that disturbs me about the video. They stressed the "poor, underpaid" workers bit & the evil big companies making money a bit to much. Stick to the facts on stuff like this. I don't need the socialist political agenda shoved down my throat to make up my mind. I get enough of that in modern movies.

I did go into our local Family Dollar store one time.
It was the only place I could pick up a 6-volt lantern battery without setting foot in a stinkin' Wal-Mart :(.
I have to give DG credit though, they do rotate their stock.
The one at the back of the shelf was 2 years younger than the one on the front.
Guess which one I bought?:p

Never been in one. I make a point to stay out of stores that have "Dollar" in their name. Also stores that contain "Mart". And ones that have "Bargain" or "Save".

I just avoid them. These tend to be low class stores with crap merchandise. Some of the shoppers appear to have the IQ of a toothpick. And what's with all the Spandex when you weigh 450 lbs? Just not an environment I enjoy being in.

I find some of these replies very interesting. A lot of dislike & even hate. No problem because we can all think & do what we want. But a lot of people need these kind of stores & need to save even pennies in order to make it. I can remember back when I had $15 left over after paying rent & that had to last me 2 weeks. I don't have to do that now but I still make a practice of paying very little for things that aren't worth more to me. And I'll say that the process of learning to live on almost nothing was probably the most valuable thing I learned in life. And along the way I've turned those pennies that I saved into dollars.

I look at it this way. If I pay $1.25 for something that I could have gotten for $4.99 on Amazon or $9.99 at a local store, that's just smart shopping. Paying more just so I can say that I don't shop there doesn't seem logical to me. And it allows me to spend big money on things that I want that cost big money.

You are forgetting the part about the $1.25 version falling apart, and having to go back and buy additional $1.25 ones a couple of times. This is called false economy.

No I'm not forgetting it. First off many of those cheap items are made by the same company in volume. And they are sold to whoever wants to buy them. Also, sometimes they are a 1 use item that I throw away or just want to try. Not every "cheap" item will break after the first use. For instance, my wife makes jewelry & we buy a lot of those cheap plastic see through cases that she stores her crystals in. They don't get hard use & last forever. Pay $1.25 at dollar tree, $9.99 on Amazon or $19.99 at a hobby store & they all do the same thing & last the same amount of time.

Now I do see your point & as a matter of fact saw an article that explained that wealthy people buy things one time rather than cheap things that they keep replacing. And I do that on certain things. But dollar stores don't carry stuff that you can pay $100 for somewhere else & it will last forever. So I save when I can & spend when I need to. And the more I save on stuff the more I can spend on something else & that works for us. Doing that over the years has allowed us to use that extra money to buy my wife's Swarovski crystal. That, I spend big bucks on.

I have lots of money now too. I got that way by saving money earlier in my life. But I did learn, along the way, that not every savings I thought I was making was indeed a savings. Some ended up wasting my hard earned money. No, I don't buy my clothes at Neiman Marcus. But I don't buy them at Dollar General either. You learn the trade-offs regarding what and where you should purchase things with experience over time.

luckily we only have one dollar store even remotely close to us.

My rich brother bought stock in dollar type stores in 1999 and made a killing during covid....probably why the companies are building more stores to use up the excess profits.
