I believe that 1984 is in full bloom right now, and in multiple ways.

I trust each of you have read Orwell's book, 1984. If not, stop and read it right now. It illustrated what oppressive governments are like. The lies that are told, and the reality where rubber meets the road. For instance, I remember an old fellow saying how they never were hungry, because as a child when he reached for seconds, his mother would tell him that he'd had enough (during the Depression years).

The deep state is in full attack mode. They are fighting for their lives and using every useful idiot they can find. The media is 100% committed to the same battle. It doesn't matter the cause (pandemic, racism, police brutality, white privilege...), as long as people are willing to go out & cause chaos & distractions. Even in the nearest small town, they've had protests and marches and pushing for violence.

But the reason for all of this is the real 1984, the year, and it was near identical events. Reagan came into office after Carter nearly destroyed the economy. Reagan's economic plan was 'trickle down economics', a top-down system to boost the economy. The media hated him (and it) so much, they called it 'Reaganomics'. Well, guess what? It worked! And oh were they mad. The left put up Mondale as their candidate, a true dork/dweeb. Reagan beat him, winning 49 / 50 states. A 97.5% electoral map victory. What an embarrassment. It took 8 mores years for a womanizing democrat to win (Clinton). (side note, the only president to win 100% of the electoral college was George Washington, and he won 100% both elections!)

Well, the left are determined to stop Trump from reelection. To avoid the 90%+ electoral victory. They don't care how. Economic collapse. Pandemic killing millions. Fraud. I'm surprised they haven't tried assassination (but don't hold your breath). Trapped animals are vicious, and that is the Left right now. 1984 is a dangerous place.

I don't think either Brazil or 1984 is a good analogy for the situation right now. If the Democrats take over the Presidency and Senate, then yes, we'll get there, but we aren't right now. Maybe some states, but not the country as a whole.

Both of those were about complete top down government control of the people. There weren't any riots. Brave New World might be a closer fit - not perfect, but closer. There was unrest that the government was powerless to stop.

If we're doing novel analogies Fahrenheit 451 fits into the narrative. Were going that way.
I think there's elements from all three of the classic dystopias in our society, and there have been for quite some time (which is where the authors got the ideas). Definitely some of the modern surveillance is very 1984/Orwellian, while the distraction and entertainment in our society is reminiscent of Brave New World. I see the Fahrenheit 451 (which is my favorite of the three story-wise) analogy too. . . It's a little scary how we're getting closer and closer to those realities.
