Probably smelled better back thenCan ya'll imagine what cities smelled like in 1890? Those of us who farm are reminded occasionally. (excluding the sh*tfest in san fran)
Quick check of the net... In 1880 new york city had 150,000 horses providing transport of some type. Avg 50lbs of manure per horse per day..7,500,000lbs. Avg of 3750 tons of horse crap in the streets each day.
When I see all the chemical crap people put on and in their horses I have to wonder how safe the manure is in the garden.Oh, you should smell around here when manure is spread on the huge fields. It'll hit you in the face for a day or two.
But I am glad that manure is used instead of chemicals.
Fly sprays, dewormers, vaccines, etc.!I don't know if people do that here. Why would they do that?
Bet those were chestnut trees.
Red wood.Bet those were chestnut trees.
My bad. I read that as North Carolina

My wife's grandfather sold pumps to industry including Heinz. The acid and viscosity of ketchup was a nightmare, or so I was told.
