What does your state do, as far as SHTF food...???
The problem is you need to have a way to get to it. A storehouse of food 30 miles away isn't much use to the average person if there is no available gasoline or a sleigh of reindeer. What does your state do, as far as SHTF food...???
We ate a lot of that CD food when in Scouts (1960s). I remember a sawdust texture bar that was sweet, a Tootsie roll type of stick, and a Tang-like beverage.Y'all shoulda been around in Alabama during the cold-war years!
Every fallout shelter was stocked with enough food for over a hundred people to consume over a month!
And they were everywhere!!!
Yes, the state did that, with help from the fed.
ALL states did that back then.Y'all shoulda been around in Alabama during the cold-war years!

Yes, the state did that, with help from the fed.
I wonder if that was similar to the bar I ate in the arctic rations I was issued as a Marine in Norway. AFAIK it was made by compressing a large amount of Frosted Flakes (or something similar) into a solid mass. It came in a spam type can with two other bars that seemed to be made from Corn Flakes. I think we were supposed to reconstitute them into a gruel type dish but we just ate them as they were. Which was a bit hard on the teeth. We ate a lot of that CD food when in Scouts (1960s). Food supplies could be found at fenced-in 'camp' locations.I think most states have a certain amount of shtf supplies stockpiled to respond to those scenarios likely to be encountered. But none are laying in supplies to cover every eventuality nor to supply their entire populations.
And doled out in an unfair manner.Whatever any government has stored will be woefully inadequate compared to what is truly needed.
Yes...that is unbelievable and insane.I was just reading an article on Food Supply News that I found pretty unbelievable. It said that govt was recalling foods on purpose so they could swoop in and buy/take it and that they were storing it in the salt mines in Kansas. We have three saltmines in our state that would be possible, but very highly not probable to do that in, and one is not far from where I live. The other two are just a few hrs drive away. Anyway, it said that the US govt (not Kansas govt) was stockpiling food for govt people when SHTF. I find this insane, because what good would it do stockpiled in my area of Kansas?
For COG purposes, yes. For the average joe's civil defense shelter, no.Yes...that is unbelievable and insane.
The key problem would be that recalls of food in retail packaging would be subject to the same problems we have as preppers. Retail packaging doesn't provide a good shelf life. The more they get handled, the worse the integrity of that packaging becomes.
By the time they have it all stashed in a salt mine, it will be time to start rotating it out........because it will be going bad.
.......and most average retail packaged foods are hard to assemble into a balanced diet.
Manufacturers of LTS food like Mountain House do make freezed dried food packed in #10 cans for the government. Those are stocked in Cold War era bunker complexes that provide COG (Continuation of Government) capability during a very severe crisis. Those foods were carefully selected to provide a balanced diet and have shelf life>30 years.
Back several years ago, Mountain House were selling some products described as "Over-runs" from batches made for COG.
I have no doubt that when the risk of nuclear war started to rise back up a few years ago, those cold war era COG facilities probably started getting quietly restocked and refreshed.......but not with recalled food.
Agreed. For COG purposes, yes. For the average joe's civil defense shelter, no.
The .gov has realized it really isn't going to do much good and many buildings no longer even have the shelters. If the missiles were on the way I doubt we would even be told. It would simply create panic in the streets and not save anyone.
With traffic the way it is now it is simply not realistic to think people could get out of any Major city in the US in the time it takes for modern missiles to reach us?
