I bet that not very many remember that being a hit song by Tennessee Ernie Ford, in about 58'.

While I used the military to get my advanced degrees, it came with significant service obligations that took me to 22 years. I would often sing that song about owing my sole to the company store. I retired right at 22 years the moment I paid off the company store.

It may have been a hit before I was born, but it was still very popular in my mom's and dad's listening choices in the 60s and 70s. They loved the good stuff. They used to go square dancing on Saturday nights when I was little. Then we moved. No more square dancing.
