I have a question about lodging in California for those of you who live there or vacation there. We'll be going to a wedding in a bit and will be in the area for probably four days. The wedding itself is at a place call "Roaring Camp", which is a little north of Santa Cruz. The address says "Felton", which must be a small town. There is a "Meet and Greet" the day before the wedding in San Jose (which I think is about a 30 minute drive from the wedding location?) Also a brunch in San Jose the morning after the wedding. We are trying to decide where to stay. As is typical at weddings, we expect to be on our own for the most part. The groom and family will be busy with wedding stuff so I don't think we'll be hanging out, even though they are our close friends for decades.

We're not big into cities, so we were thinking of staying some place closer to the wedding venue, which looks (in pictures) to be in the mountains (or forest). For activities, we prefer outdoor nature stuff over city stuff. Beach's are OK, but not a primary interest for us.

Any recommendations for places to stay and things to do? Cost is not a big concern on lodging. I mean, I don't relish spending $1k per night, but a couple hundred is fine if that's what California costs. We could go nice, or we could go rustic (rustic is not the same as dirty or rundown - I consider it just "older style"). There will be three of us staying, and we will have a rental car.

Haha- my cousin would say go to Carmel 😂. We used to go to Santa Cruz often growing up. Last time I mentioned it to my cousin, she told me not to go there as it wasn’t safe due to so many gangs. I don’t say this to be a Debbie Downer, but please stay safe and even as a fella maybe keep to a group and/or at least have someone who knows where you are.
I do think San Jose is safer and would also check air bnb. I have a distant cousin and family who lives there.

I was born in San Jose and lived there until we married, then moved to Santa Cruz/Aptos. I know the area well. Monterrey is too far of a drive, so is Carmel. Felton is a fun hole in the wall. I'd stay somewhere in Santa Cruz, haven't been there in years, so I'd pick the best place advertised. Highway 17 from Santa Cruz to Felton isn't too far. It's just a winding road. I used to commute every day from Santa Cruz to Sunnyvale to work, and that was not a fun drive.
We were married at a small church in Aptos, near our house. Our reception was at a country club in Santa Cruz. 41 yrs ago. Ha.
I still have a fondness for Santa Cruz, leftover from my hippy days. I'm sure it's not the same. Spent alot of time on the Boardwalk/beach in Santa Cruz. Watching the old movie, "The Lost Boys"....showed alot of the boardwalk, and the house they stayed in was in Felton.

Did you ever stay at the hostel lighthouse up from Santa Cruz? I think it's called pigon point lighthouse..I stayed there once on my way down to a training at SLO.
Not sure if it's still a hostel but it was pretty cool.
I loved Carmel and Monterey..it was very crowded tho last time I was there and that was almost 20 years ago..

Anything south past Sacramento is a gang infused S#![hole full of illegals, crackheads and homeless camps anymore..

I looked it up..it is called pigon point lighthouse hostel in the pigon point state park off hwy 1 27 miles from Santa Cruz.
Felton is up a different road from the boardwalk so that might be too much driving ..but it'd be worth a trip.
Hwy 1 on the coast is a beautiful drive if your not in a big hurry comming or going.
