Hey its the greatest free show on earth...

Unless you count paying to park, paying to use the toilet, paying for over priced food and drinks.

The kids are having fun and its a cold sunny day.

Too many freaks, weirdos, beggars and panhandlers for me. Not to mention the high cost of everything.

We went to the parades in Metairie, that's in Jefferson parish, suburb of New Orleans. It's much much much better than in the city of freaks, felons and freeloaders.

I was in New Orleans at the end of February for a work conference. We were staying at the Sheraton on Canal Street, and the parade route ran right in front of the hotel. One of the nights after the conference, we went down to Bourbon Street, and that was...quite an experience. Now I can say I've been to New Orleans, and I don't feel the need to ever go back.

After you get past the more boisterous things going on in the Big Easy, after you go there a few times you'll find a few places you like to go. We don't go out of our way to go there anymore, but if we're in the vicinity we might hit The Quarter for a few things:

Hot sauce at the Pepper Palace.
Muffaletta at the Central Grocery.
Cafe au lait and beignets at Cafe Du Monde. (if you don't mind standing in line for a while)
Dinner and whiskey at the Bourbon House.
Hurricane at Pat O'Briens
Listen to some street jazz.

Don't forget oysters at Felixes
National WW2 museum.
The French Market (across from central grocery)
City Park botanical gardens
Audubon Zoo and the Aquarium with a river cruise from one to the other.
And finally a stop at the Verdi Mart at 4am for a roast beef poorboy.

I did hit Cafe Du Monde while we were there. You can't really beat fried dough with powdered sugar. I also went in to some hit sauce store, not sure if it was the one you mentioned, but they had loads of hot sauce in there. It wasnt a bad trip by any means, but I have a hard time with big cities. Not my particular cup of tea.
