I have a couple old lead-acid batteries I've been experimenting with. I thought I may try and dispose of them properly, but now that I know lead is just being dumped into the environment anyway I won't even bother.

Most brass such as brass hammers contain lead for milling and forming and most if not all silver plated jewelry contain lead. Lead is naturally formed in Ore's and extracted from, generally from the same Ore's that contain Silver. Lead has been made out to be the biggest bad guy of the 20th century and unjustly so, the biggest problem has been from lead paints and water lines sweat'ed with lead. If one listens to the governments and yuppies everything causes cancer that's not to say lead isn't bad if ingested, it is but we shouldn't panic over it every time we hear the word lead.

I grew up in the leaded world and in fact I have no heavy metal concerns according to blood tests and that's growing up using my teeth pinching lead weights on my fishing lines for years not only as a kid but still do it today. I have worked with lead for a long time from pressing my own shotgun shells to using it on stain glass, I have no adverse health problems that can be attributed to lead.

Wow, enjoy your cancer when you get it.

I am 60 years old and over the years I have handled a lot of lead,in many different forms, and I am cancer free no lung problems and nothing wrong with the old ticker,in fact other than joint pain and some arthritis I am the picture of health,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,yes lead is not your friend but it not the monster many think it is

I don't know, my entire family lived in the late 80s-100. I'm seeing a lot of young folks dying of cancers that never really grew up around lead Skeeter ;) Many people my age grew up in the leaded world, one still sees a lot of o'l timers fishing the brooks and streams using lead. kindly an unwarranted statement though "enjoy your cancer when you get it"

I also remember people talking shxt about dairy butter being bad and the healthy choice is to use margarine... that didn't work out to well did it or the same thing about using aluminum pans for cooking in, that was also debunked. Fear can grow beyond reality ;)

True, so is petroleum, acrylamides (very hazardous cancer causing agent Group 2A carcinogen by the government and used in many polymers including water treatment, cement, sewage treatment, cosmetics, paper making and sugar) or what about the liners in tin food cans everyone has in the pantry, the clear film lining contains BPA. There is thousands and thousands of items and foods we all should be concerned with, have you ever looked into how synthetic vitamins are made? We are exposed to many cancer causing substances everyday take your pick. You are listing 3 items, 3 of the less likely you may come in contact with on a daily bases but what about everything you are in contact on a daily bases? As grayghost668 and I have said we been around what you have listed most of our life and we show no signs of adverse health, I get blood tested twice a year (an age thing my insurance requires) In my day we changed many break shoes on cars when they were made from asbestos, my stack on the tractor is still wrapped in asbestos, I have an old out building that has asbestos siding.

I'm far less exposed to the poisons of the modern world than most people that live in the suburbs and cities, I have very little exposers to carcinogens in foods than most people since I raise, hunt and grow my own foods so one really shouldn't be overly concerned about me, it's the suburbanites and city folks I would be concerned about ;)

One thing to consider about cancer causing chemicals, which are everywhere in modern life, is an individual's immune system and resistance. I knew a guy that worked in auto body repair right after high school. He got cancer after just a couple years from the bondo dust and paint thinners, and passed away in a slow and miserable way. The shop he worked in had at least fifteen other guys there. Some had been doing it for thirty years with no health issues.
I don't doubt that lead is not good for you by ingesting it, but agree it's not the evil that it is being touted. I even played with the Mercury from glass thermometers when I was a kid and didn't grow two heads or anything. I honestly think sometimes that worrying about health issues does as much damage to your health as they do. Just remember, everything in moderation.

A big part this cancer scare has been nothing more than a big marketing ploy by government, drug manufacturers, and green weenies. Get people scared of something and they will spend countless $$$ to fix it. I grew up in a leaded world, leaded gas, leaded paint, leaded pipes, etc. In my state there are a lot of lead/silver mines too. My father worked in a lead acid battery plant and has no ill effects from years of handling lead. I'm not suggesting that a person go around sucking on lead, but it really isn't anything to get worked up about.

Does anybody else get "weirded out" by store bought food? Like food that comes in cans? Or really any food that has a year long shelf life? It may just be a cultural thing, but I don't understand what they're putting in foods to make them so resilient!

My aunt and uncle own a farm, and they currently provide food (and drink) for all of us almost year round, so long as we agree to work for them when they need it. Other than that, we mostly eat organic food because we don't want to take any chances.

Does anybody else behave similarly? Is this rational?

I posted somewhere in the forum with pictures were I opened up a can of gravy and sausage that was 5 or 6 years (maybe longer) past the best by use date and it was fine, no taste loss. Corn in a can without additives that was 25 years old was opened and it tasted ok but bland. many things go beyond the dates without fear of food poisoning just that nutritional value has depleted thus the reason for dates, I wouldn't make a diet of it in normal times though. I do have problems with store bought foods and generally try to avoid them as in day to day life but in survival situations I have no qualms of eating them nor storing them as part of my preps.

EDITED: I looked it up the date was may 2005 I opened and tested it in 2016 so it was 11 years past the date, it was Franko cream gravy

Playing off peoples' fears to push an agenda is sick thing that nearly every government agency is guilty of. This is part of why I don't trust the government.

Way back in the olden days when kids were eating lead paint, drinking water through lead pipes, playing with mercury and going to asbestos covered schools they seemed to be much smarter than kids of today. Since every school district in the US got new schools out of the lead and asbestos scare, the schools seem to keep putting out dumber kids every year. This is proof that lead and asbestos is actually good for developing children's intelligence. Maybe the government can start reintroducing lead and asbestos through the "free" government approved school lunch program.

I talk about this all the time. Why do we grind up perfectly good food, process and preserve it, and then glue it back together to look and taste like something completely different? I try to eat as much unprocessed, untouched stuff as I can. Of course I still like the occasional cheeseburger, just not daily. I just saw roast beef in the deli for just over ten bucks a pound. I can buy a roast for about four, cook it to my liking, and slice it for sandwiches myself. Mine comes with no presertivites as well.
