Military packs are not the best packs for on foot long hauls, I would use the mid/high price internal/external frame civilian packs. Civilian packs tend to hold the equipment closer to the body snugging the spine, civilian packs make it easier to evenly distribute the weight and are far more comfortable for long treks.

I personally use a Fox 5200 pack

Military luggage is built to a specification laid down by a government and its ALWAYS a Compromise, THEN those bags are made to contract by the LOWEST bidder. Better off cherry picking the best bits of design used by the military AND civilian experts and buy from a more prestige bag manufacturer, I currently use some Berghaus most mostly 5.11 .

I do chuckle from time to time when I'm told 'but it's Military Specs'

Yup Mil spec usually equates to a Compromise design built by the lowest bidder using the cheapest materials A rough example would be the Colt M4 CONTRACT built Carbine built for general issue compared to to H & K M416 built for Special forces duty. Though often Milspec does mean tougher it does not mean better.

You can buy a Mil spec combat jacket like the ubiquitous M65 or you can go to a prestigious civilian outdoor clothing manufacturer and get one made of water resistant, anti fungal, IR reflective, rip stop fabric, triple overlock sewn seams, Canadian buttons, no bloody velcro, bellows patch pockets, double thickness on all wear points with taped seams.

Even just not that far back Marines and Soldiers would purchase there own magazines from a civilian supplier because it was more reliable and better built (Magpul) than the milspec magazines, The Pentagon finally adopted the Magpul and is part of the NSN supply :)

Even now the average professional British soldier still buys his own after market Combat Boots, Eyewear, Waterproofs, Rucksack, mini cooker, pocket knife etc

I think that was possibly how over this side of the pond many soldiers ended up using the higher specification Radway Green 5.56 MM Ammo mags that fit both British and US issue assault rifles, the Colt ones and other mass contract magazines did not have hardened metal feed lips and distorted to easily. the feed lips on then Radway greens had hardened lips.

Best bit of advice I was given about load bearing bags; go to a few outdoorsy or army surplus shops and try them on. Doesn't matter how tacticool, popular or expensive a bag is, if it isn't comfy to carry, it will just be either an uncomfortable pain in the rump, or an expensive cupboard filler. You can then order online if you find the right one cheaper.

Exactly right dear lady, I travelled up to Newcastle to try out my latest bag before I bought it.
