But They Shot the Wrong Guy

An armed guy in Amarillo, Texas tried to take hostages at a church.
The intruder fired a shot and the church goers jumped him, one of the brave men took his gun away from him.
So far so good...
When the police arrived the good guy was still holding the gun. Oops! ... So of course the police shot him.
He lived.
Teachable moment. Do not have gun in hand when the police show up. I expect everybody here knows that but still, a teachable moment.

A point raised on NPR today by a black teacher in Chicago against 'arming teachers', (media bias removed: 'allowing teachers to be armed').
She said if a black teacher is shooting at a white terrorist when the cops show up, they will shoot the black person with the gun (this being Chicago).
Unfortunately this seems to validate her point.
Not good.

Chicago cops may be somewhat more likely to do so. The prejudice seems to be widespread, throughout the Earth's Northern Hemisphere. Skin color is an easy clue. In Southeast Asia things can be harder to spot; length-of-nose, width of face, shade of brown only a maybe. A closer look needed before pulling the trigger.

What I am attempting to express here is that prejudices are primitive survival tools. Some of them aren't much good.
