Indeed they were! I actually saw ONE. Fortunately they were rare.Hey 42,
These were something else.......with the 428 CJ "Package"!!
Later, Mark
There was 100 Mach 1's with 351's for every one of those. My brother-in-law had one.
We ate the 351's alive with the hot 327's.
Now, the 1967 'stang with the 11:1 390..... my brother had one. It was a horse of a different color (pun), purple.
Only ran on 100 octane Amaco white gas. Any other premium and it wouldn't idle and black smoked.
It was fast! I mean more than 135 MPH fast. Probably have more than a few white hairs from riding with him. Everything was 2-lane then; there were no interstates.
The factory low-balled the horsepower rating (320 at 4800 rpm for the 390) to keep people from paying a ton in insurance. (the 428 Cobra Jet was only rated at 335)
Yeah, right! Liars!
There is no telling what they actually made.Wikipedia said:"The 428 cu in (7.0 L) Cobra Jet engine continued unchanged in the 1969 and 1970 model years and continued to be advertised at just 335 hp (250 kW; 340 PS) despite being closer to 410 hp (306 kW; 416 PS)."
That mustang was however his major source of income until he got a job at age 20. About that much horsepower.
