Something doesn't sound right here, over the many years I have seen a lot of mishaps regarding chainsaws, I have seen chainsaws get downright hot to the point of smoking the oil soak sawdust and seen spilling fuel on the exhaust causing a flareup or working overhead and having the gas cap vibrate loose but I never heard of a chainsaw exploding while using. Very little information is public. Was he filling a hot chainsaw up with fuel or was he actually using it? It seems they are being pretty lose with the word explosion, more likely burst'ed into flames from a leak (85% 3rd degree burns)?

Coroner Scott Grim later said the man was doing work on his own property when the chainsaw exploded.

same here, never heard that machine go boom like a bomb..but put the word explosion in the headlines and you sell..

It's what caught my attention 'explosion' even the Coroner appears to sensationalize the unfortunate event. 85% 3rd degree burns, that sounds more like a filling mishap by igniting a gas can during the chainsaw re-fill. I hope they do a follow up. We use chainsaws almost everyday I kind of like to know the circumstances.
