Snow in Florida.... I thought the weather was supposed to get warmer.

I’ve read that heat pumps pretty much quit working at about 32deg. There are some that go lower but there not common. Either way, not having a backup is really not smart. Even with the heat strips in a unit, what are they going to do if the power goes out during one of these cold spells. We did the spray foam thing on the bottom of our roof and part of the house. We haven’t used the central heat - one fireplace has kept it warm in here.
It’s been interesting. A lot of electric hvac here. A heat pump ain’t any good much below 25 degrees, and there have been a few days where is didn’t get up to 25. There are gonna be some hellacious utility bills next month.... grad I’m not gonna be one of them.

I run the electric system overnight so I don’t have to get up and restock the wood stove, but keep it toasty all day at least. Guess I’m getting lazy in my old age..... the under floor radiant heat systems are great, nothing feels better than warm feet!Yeah, and heat strips make your electric meter spin up to warp speed.
I don’t think we ever turned the heat on last year. The master bath gets cool, but I put a warming mat under the tile when we did the bathroom. Costs about a quarter a day to keep the floor at 72 degrees. Most awesome!
Oh - we do have an all electric mini split unit in the basement. It heats to 100% down to 10 degrees and doesn’t have heat strips.
We did that as well. I have noticed that my thermostat in my car registers about 45 degrees in the morning when I get ready to go to work, but when I drive for a few minutes it falls below 20 ( the temp outside). I think it is one of the best investments we ever made.We did the spray foam thing on the bottom of our roof and part of the house. I wish that I had kept up with ours, but I know it has paid for itself.Yeah - Tuesday mine started at 38, but it only took a minute to drop to 8.
On the foam, I kinda kept up with the utility bills and it took less than 2 years to pay for itself.
We've been pretty much the same with 20s, but later this week up in the 50s & 60s finally getting back to normal Texas winter. Thank goodness !It has been in the lower 20's in Texas. Today it is going all the way up to the 40's. Heat wave!!
Our pump house is made out of garage door panels. We wrap the pipes and throw blankets on them. Its the line sticking up out of the ground that freeze. We do drain our lines and shut the well off when temp dip down. If this is becoming a new norm, we may need to rethink how things are done though.I just hope the folks that have well houses insulated them before the cold snap arrived in parts of the South/Southeast?
