It's currently snowing in Tallahassee. Plenty of video online already.
We could see some snow tonight, or tomorrow morning in Plant City. We'll see.

It's already been way colder than most previous years, for the past two days, was 41 here yesterday, 43 this morning (but also raining, so that was worse). supposed to be 31 or less tonight. Brrr....

you have these ready??

At least we are quickly selling out of our stock of winter horse blankets, lol. We closed the shop months ago, but are liquidating all of the inventory as we can. Since we're in no rush, I don't want to lose my shirt on it, just selling it all for pennies on the dollar to another shop, but we are selling them at a deep discount.

We've sold 5 blankets since posting a list of them on Mon. Probably about 3 more tonight or so, as it gets super cold for here.

Good deal for all, we get a little cash, and folks get a quality blanket for their horse's comfort, for about $20 less than they'd get it elsewhere.

We did the spray foam thing on the bottom of our roof and part of the house. We haven’t used the central heat - one fireplace has kept it warm in here.

It’s been interesting. A lot of electric hvac here. A heat pump ain’t any good much below 25 degrees, and there have been a few days where is didn’t get up to 25. There are gonna be some hellacious utility bills next month.... glad I’m not gonna be one of them.

For the next 5 days its only getting above freezing once . Overnight lows in or near single digits . Then a rain storm moving in with temps in 40's Monday then dropping back below freezing . This could become a ice storm . If the ground is still froze when the rain falls or the rain is still here when the temperature drops or both this could get bad .

I’ve read that heat pumps pretty much quit working at about 32deg. There are some that go lower but there not common. Either way, not having a backup is really not smart. Even with the heat strips in a unit, what are they going to do if the power goes out during one of these cold spells.

Yeah, and heat strips make your electric meter spin up to warp speed.

I don’t think we ever turned the heat on last year. The master bath gets cool, but I put a warming mat under the tile when we did the bathroom. Costs about a quarter a day to keep the floor at 72 degrees. Most awesome!

Oh - we do have an all electric mini split unit in the basement. It heats to 100% down to 10 degrees and doesn’t have heat strips.

I run the electric system overnight so I don’t have to get up and restock the wood stove, but keep it toasty all day at least. Guess I’m getting lazy in my old age..... the under floor radiant heat systems are great, nothing feels better than warm feet!

We did that as well. I have noticed that my thermostat in my car registers about 45 degrees in the morning when I get ready to go to work, but when I drive for a few minutes it falls below 20 ( the temp outside). I think it is one of the best investments we ever made.

Yeah - Tuesday mine started at 38, but it only took a minute to drop to 8.

On the foam, I kinda kept up with the utility bills and it took less than 2 years to pay for itself.
I wish that I had kept up with ours, but I know it has paid for itself.

It has been in the lower 20's in Texas. Today it is going all the way up to the 40's. Heat wave!!
We've been pretty much the same with 20s, but later this week up in the 50s & 60s finally getting back to normal Texas winter. Thank goodness :)!

I just hope the folks that have well houses insulated them before the cold snap arrived in parts of the South/Southeast?
Our pump house is made out of garage door panels. We wrap the pipes and throw blankets on them. Its the line sticking up out of the ground that freeze. We do drain our lines and shut the well off when temp dip down. If this is becoming a new norm, we may need to rethink how things are done though.

it happens here too, every year people complain about how winter surprized us...think it has happened for a couple of thousand years before...winter comes once a year ;)
I only complain about the habbit of spreading salt on the roads,it's **** to do,don't understand and never will, just plow the roads and drive accordingly.

Oddly, the main part of my house stays pretty warm, even with the A/C and Heat unit off. It's easily 10 degrees warmer than my bedroom, when off. We actually turned it to heat last night for the first time in years. It helped.

Though our "lows" are like what you guys have for highs, lol... Still, we just aren't used to it, or designed for it...such as insulated pipes, etc. I just had the water going a trickle, to keep it all moving. We hit 30 degrees this morning. Had to scrape ice off the window...that was new. And it took quite a bit to get my diesel truck going....

But, we made over $500 last night, selling horse blankets and odds and ends, so that was the silver lining in all this! Cha-ching! It was colder than a witch's teat out there though, and spending an hour outside in it, right at the lowest temp for today, sucked bad, lol, especially when filling the horses' water buckets! (there's always ice cold water spray...)

With the sun up, it's still 32 back at the ranch. Here in the city though, it's warmer (but that's about 50 miles to the southwest....)

There's been many a years down south that we are running around in shorts and tanks on Christmas day and New Years. Feb is when we normally may see a day or two of cold, but seems like the patterns have been changing recently. There will be a few things that will have to change before next winter. My biggest will be not having my girls not exposed to my Billy in the months of may thru sept. I let my boy run with the girls 24/7 cause normally the cold is not an issue, but I don't want to risk having babies born in freezing weather conditions. Also need to insulate the pump house along with a few barns. Just some things us southerners are not used to, but we will have to adapt and change with the weather patterns. This past year has been insane with all the records being broken with hurricanes, floods, and the cold. East coast line now dealing with article freeze with hurricane force winds.

They been saying we are heading in to a cooler phase even before all this global warming crap and now that the sun has entered or heading into a grand solar minima phase I think we are heading into a cooling period then add the earths magnetic field reversal plus the earth has slightly slowed it's rotation things are bound to change though all of it is a normal process and not doom and gloom (unless your pipes freeze) we just have to live with the changes and make some changes at the home front.
