So I've been a little quiet on the prepping front lately, due to an increase in business at my work, and also due to me spending some time and money on projects around the house to improve quality of life pre-SHTF, haha. We've been doing a lot of work in the backyard setting up a patio, but that's a story for another post once it's finished. Got a ways to go yet on that project.
But what I have finished for the time being is getting my comic book and memorabilia collection properly housed and displayed. 334 comic books, 31 graphic novels, and various action figures and other collectibles were starting to clutter up my living room. As my wife and I collect and enjoy all of these things together, we decided to use it all to decorate the living room and turn it into a sort of "nerd cave."
We got several wall shelf units, a large bookcase, and a nice curio cabinet from IKEA and set to work. Once I got the cabinet assembled, things fell together pretty quickly, and we're very pleased with the result. What follows will be pics and maybe explanations for some of my more favorite pieces. I'm a huge geek, you've been warned!
Of course, I have to start with the "Shadow wall" as I call it... Some of my favorite pieces here. Got my hand-drawn cover of The Shadow #1 from the 2012 series on the top right. Batman #253 from the 70's, first appearance of The Shadow since the pulp magazines of the 50's on the top left. Batman and The Shadow solve a crime together, and Batman calls The Shadow his greatest inspiration. In the middle I have a virgin variant ("virgin" meaning the cover art with no text added, only 1 printed per 100 issues) of Masks #1, which is a series about The Shadow and Green Hornet and Miss Fury and tons of other pulp heroes teaming up. Middle-right is The Shadow #1 from 1973. Bottom right is just up because I love the cover with the radio mic; it's from '89 but it's not terribly valuable. Also got my Judge Dredd and Luke Skywalker Pop figures on the shelf there. I have a lot of Pops throughout the room, my wife and I love those things.
Next wall over, I've got Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep and an X-files variant. Those are up for cover aesthetics.
Got my AvP corner with classic issues, Pops. Second picture is the Aliens: Earth War series with beautiful painted covers. The one on the bottom is a Platinum Edition variant that I got signed by the artist in Dallas last year at a con, so it's one of my
more valuable books.
A fun Hellblazer issues in which John Constantine turns thirty and celebrates his birthday with Zatanna, Swamp Thing, and other DC/Vertigo mainstays. And gotta love the Star Wars calendar.
Main wall with some Deadpool variants, and on the left my wife has Ms. Marvel represented through the ages from top to bottom. The guns are handpainted replicas of Ebony and Ivory, Dante's guns from Devil May Cry. I made them several years ago for a costume. Can't really see it in the picture but I kept them out for display because I did some cool detail work on the slides. Bottom right is a print of Ezzio from Assassin's Creed, also scored at a con.
Further over on the same wall, we've got all books of my wife's. She's a big fan of the DC women so we have titles featuring Poison Ivy, Batgirl, Zatanna, and a lot of Harley Quinn. Harley is definitely her favorite character, and the top left book is the first ever appearance of Harley in a comic, and at the last con we were at we saw it on sale for $200. Very bottom left is Wonder Woman #1 from the 80's relaunch of the title, great art by George Perez and then beside it is the Amazing Spider-Man Annual #21 where Peter Parker and Mary Jane get married. I gave it to my lovely wife on our wedding day so besides it's age/rarity, it has untold sentimental value.
All the other comics that didn't make the wall, plus our graphic novels.
The curio! Star Wars on the top shelf, Marvel on the next one down, DC next down, video games/anime next down, and miscellaneous on the bottom. (Hermione's wand from Universal Studios.)
I love the way it all looks, the cabinet I feel adds a real touch of class to it all. I plan on hanging some more books once I get more frames to fill in the gaps on the walls because we can't paint, but the landlady doesn't mind holes. (Weird, I know.) I also really want to rig up some sort of lighting for the cabinet.
