I would like to have a couple of things built underground. I can probably do it myself but a trained professional might make it go faster and save $$ in the long run. If i want these things to be a secret, specifically from locals, should I look for a contractor from a a thousand miles away? Any ideas on this?

I saw a show where a guy builds underground bunkers and then ships them and installs them with a crew that isn’t local. I’m sure the money was significant though. I think if you want something secure and unknown to anyone that doing it yourself is the way to go. You can learn to do just about anything on the internet now. The only thing I think is really important is how to waterproof any underground structure. There is no use in storing supplies if they end up flooded.
Just remember its not uncommon for People to be killed digging a bunker , basement, cellar . They get their digging done then working inside the dig the walls collapse. One of the worst cases I know of guy digs a under ground shelter on weekend goes back to work that week , kids playing in dig it collapses burying kids suffocating them .
Good point. Being safe and using common sense when building anything is number one. Any shelter or security you want is no good if you or the ones you want to protect aren’t around to use it.
Im not known to be a safty police but some stuff needs mentioning. Easier to lern from Others mistakes than the hard way .
You can't keep anything secret.....whoever does the work will still tell friends and family, hey we went to so and so and built some crazy guy a bunker.....right off Smith Road in Jones County....we did several air vents and a big bulletproof door and everything....

all kidding aside when you build tell the builder it is a new house and this is the basement and because of money flow you will have to build in stages
Or the ones who talk outside the limits of there non disclosure agreement. This is done today.

Does anyone know how long it would take a relatively skilled backhoe operator to dig a hole 24' deep, 40' long and 40' wide? At this point, assume that it is mostly soil.

With a big enough trackhoe, it wont take long.
You don't have to tell anybody anything. Just like the Winchesters, done in stages, different crews, no one knew what the heck was going on, no one had the big picture. If they ask, well it's just a root cellar, or some such crap. Most people don't really give a hoot what people do as long as they get their money. Next job!

It will take longer but if you can find a place that rents out mini excavators. It won’t be as quick as full sized excavator but usually no experience is needed and you eliminate the excavation guy out of the build. Instead of straight up and down walls in the hole make it ramps going down then you eliminate the collapse risk while your project is underway. The hole will be bigger with the ramp method but then you can pick what material you use as fill around structure.
