Rotties if raised correctly will be well rounded pet and protection dogs. Their natural protection instincts of smaller creatures comes from their days as cattle herding dogs. The key to this is to raise them right.

THE GREAT PYRENEES,is a very large powerful dog and very protective of their TURF and their Family,,,,,,,Fence your yard the whole yard and train the dog to stay inside the fence put up signs,,,,their size alone will stop most people at the fence and mine can be heard for over a mile,,,,you don't mess with Chester

I have seen a few that were used to protect goast from coyotes but I never heard of them being used for guarding family with what you have seen with your dog would you say he just a watch dog or does he act like he would be willing to go after someone that came onto your place

Very good breed of dog, as long as you have plenty of dog food! Huge beasts, with great family loyalty. I had a 'friend' that was trying to sell me one of a large litter for 1000.00. She kept telling me what a great deal it was. Later I found out she was offering them free to a couple other co workers at the same time. Schmuck.....
They have a great reputation for protectiveness too. I think they would be a really good asset. I know of people that bought dogs, with pedigrees, for hundreds of dollars. I say do some research on the types of breeds that fit what your looking for, then go to the pound and find one that is close to what your looking for. Being patient is smart too, as they get new arrivals all the time. My two outside dogs are both rescues, mutts, and have turned into both friends and good protectors. I say mutts affectionately, as they are both close to the breed I was looking for. Breed is only one part of the equation, training can make most dogs into what you want. Investing a few dollars into a professional trainer to help teach both the dog and you is money well spent.

except for my BEAGLES most every dog I have owned for 30 has been a refugee of some sort,,,another note some breeds are submissive some aggressive and others are down right hard headed,,,,the Pyrenees is a hard headed dog,,,,you have to be the alpha or they will do what they want,,,,,,,,,,,pick a breed that suits your temperament

My two also killed a deer in the yard. Unfortunately it was a spotted baby. I had to hide the evidence so the wife wouldn't kill the dogs.

if you live in the country you should have several dogs even if they are just ankle biters they are great for raising the alarm that someone is out there,,,,,they will give you a chance to survive if the intruder is up to no good,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,off to work we go...................

I have been told that a lot of the livestock guardian dogs will take up be the guardian of the family and home if they don't have other animals to take care of would you say yours is just special in being that protective of the home or would that be pretty common for the breed
