Lyme disease is only one of the things the little vermin can carry. I don't really like deet on my skin, but like to spray it on my shoes and pants.ticks are worse this year than I have ever seen them, they will kill a dog if the dog is untreated for them, right now they are so bad I will not go into the woods around my house
you may laugh at this but the next time I see my doctor I am going to ask are the ingredients in front line harmful to humans,,,,hey it works on the dog,soLyme disease is only one of the things the little vermin can carry. It didn't get cold enough here last Winter to kill them. I've been letting the chickens free range more . Our problem is mosquitoes. We can't go out at sundown. I have a bug zapper and we have huge piles of fried ones every morning.ticks are worse this year than I have ever seen them, they will kill a dog if the dog is untreated for them, right now they are so bad I will not go into the woods around my house

I also read that they are more attracted to certain blood types than others. I've made a homemade concoction with citrus, camphor and peppermint oils.I don't know if it's BS or not, but I read somewhere that vitamin B1 helps keep mosquitos away. So, being a test monkey, I triple dosed what the bottle said the day before being out with the little bastids all day, until about 11PM. I didn't get bit.
So, if it's BS, maybe positive thought helped, but I have a crappy attitude, so I doubt that's it.
Wow, still snow. We are going to hit 90 on FridayHaven't seen any ticks around here yet this year. I give the dogs Nexguard, which keeps them tick free. I've only seen a couple of mosquitoes, and then only after sunset. There's more mosquitoes around the pond and springs but they're too far away to be a problem. I'm going to put some fish in the stock tanks soon to keep any mosquitoes from laying their eggs there. It's suppose to snow this weekend so that should help keep most of the pests under control too.
Just one of the joys of living in the mountains. Yesterday it was sunny, clear and 75. An unexpected fast moving storm blew in and within an hour the temp dropped over 30 degs. Luckily none of the trees or berry plants were damaged from the wind.Wow, still snow. We are going to hit 90 on Friday
I do have a question for you all, too...
I have been around ticks all my life, but never have seen any that will dig into your skin and try to get under it. All I've ever seen to this year want a meal and move on.
Now we have ones that try to burrow in. WTF?
Every tic I've known and removed will burrow the head, sometime a little deeper if given the chance for either case. Never seen nor had a tic that just bites than leave. Most will stay on ya till full or carefully removed.
I planted trout, bluegill and catfish in the pond. I'm looking for some grass carp (I think that's the right name) to add for mosquitoe control. What I understand they only grow to about 3 inches. I'm thinking goldfish or bluegill for the stock tanks. The advantage of bluegill when winter comes is I'd toss them in the pond, or eat them, before I drain the tanks. The stock tanks would be a great place to teach the grandkids how to fish too. When I stocked my pond with trout I figured they would would eat mosquitoes larvae than my wife decided to inform me that trout wouldn't eat the larva's, my grand daughter said the same thing. They ain't here to ask so I looked it up since I couldn't remember the fish that did eat them. My problem is these fish are too small and the trout would have a field day, I have a lot of bats but unfortunately the bats are reactive to my problem and not enough bats to make a dent same with the dragonflies.
Known fish that eat mosquitoes larvae "goldfish, mosquito fish, minnows, koi and guppies"
Came across in the news,
Indiana toddler dies from suspected tick bite infection, family says http://www.foxnews.com/health/2017/...uspected-tick-bite-infection-family-says.html
Also forgot to mention that dry ice can be used to bait ticks.
They are attracted to CO2, and putting a lump of dry ice on a white cloth and waiting several hours will call them in and give you an idea of how bad they are around your property.
