I've read a little about fish antibiotics and some are supposed to be safe for human consumption. What are your opinions about fish antibiotics, what brands would you recommend, and how to figure out dosage. I of course wouldn't use them unless nothing else was available in the case of a disaster.

send a pm to doc pops and ask him, think he can give some guide lines about those antibiotics

What you are looking for is (USP) United States Pharmacopia, and an expiration date at least a year or more out. I would only get meds from a US based business, also only if they show me a picture of the drug (so I can look up the identifiers in drug reference or on a pill identifier on line) . There are relabelers e.g.: a large chain drug store orders x number of an antibiotic and there is an over run, this goes to a relabeler. You also have to remember there people that have fish that cost more than our cars. A vet will not give them substandard meds. I would only use antibiotics from Aquatic Pharmacy, a US company in Avery Island, Wa. Aquaticpharmacy.com. all of my requirements are met with them.
"This is for information purpose only" ! More damage than good can be done with any medication if you have not been educated. I would also recommend getting an good book like (The Sandford Guide To Antimicrobial Therapy) , most of us were born with a good immune. System, that said sometimes we need help. You also have to remember that antibiotics kill the good as well as the bad bugs. That's why people get the $H!T$ . Also as with any medication there always side effects, and the possibly of an allergic reaction that could KILL. Do you have the knowledge or meds to combat this, can you secure an airway manually or surgically. All of these things have to be taken into account before you administer even an aspirin (ASA) .
Let me get off track here for just a minute! Every should have 81 mg baby ASA on hand for someone presenting with S/S of a MI (heart attack) . AND WOMEN PRESENT DIFFRENTLY THAN men. This could save a LIFE.
So here is some info to hopefully help you start an informed decision.
Good luck, be safe, and God bless.
P.S. what I am comfortable giving and\or doing is because of years of school, training and experience. Even then sometimes I sit back and ponder for a minute or look up S/S, drugs, or confer with a colleague.
Start now and learn, there some good books and websites th get more info.
PM I will give you more info for your educating your self.
God's speed.

Thanks for the advice! Using fish antibiotics would be a last choice in a situation where there were no other options. I was just curious about it. I should probably also invest in a medical book, because I know if something happened the internet may not be available.

There were a lot of posts on this site a while back about fishbiotics. Do a little searching and there were links on where to buy them and a lot of useful info. About them. I wouldn't hesitate with taking them. The most important thing is make sure you are taking the right one for the job. There's enough info on the web to learn what you need if you look for it.

and by the way, if first-aid isn't yet familiar to you, take time to learn the basics at first.
later one can advance the ladder of skills ;)

I am not a big proponent of fish antibiotics, I know their are many preppers that believe this is the only way to get antibiotics, but if you have a good dialogue with your family physician this is the safer route. Agree on what Doc Pop's related to you, if you still propose to go that route. Another book which can be had on used from Amazon is a the Physician Desk Reference, while it is full of medical jargon for professional medical staff, it does give you the counter-indications and what that drug is best used for. Additionally it prevents administration for "drug cocktails".

I do strongly urge that you follow Doc pops recommendations.

I've seen even well experienced doctors prescribe gram-positive antibiotics for gram-negative bacteria so anyone considering keeping antibiotics as part of their preps really do need to have dialogue with doctors to understand what they can and cannot be used to treat. Also an understanding of how the body builds immunity to antibiotics (or any other drug) is very important. This is a big problem in today's world due to overuse of many of the more common antibiotics. I think a study of natural remedies could see a much more effective treatment of many of the more simple problems that afflict us, i.e., the common cold.

They don't have a separate plant just to make animal antibiotics. They are all made in the same place with the same safety guidelines and quality control, just labelled differently.
I use them when I need them. ONLY WHEN I NEED THEM. If you have a medical knowledge or can read a PDR they are perfectly fine for human use.

Great info. I've had a number of doctor friends say the same. I have used fish antibiotics before and they worked just fine. A good PDR helps as well. Thanks for your in depth knowledge. Look forward to reading more.

At the very least, get a PDR.

I'm new on here snd Doc Pops sounds like a very knowledgeable guy. Great information.

I store them, this is what I'm storing. (These are last resort, all other options have failed) Always better to fight it on your own for as long as possible be it prescribed from the doctor or 3rd party means as below!!! Learn the specific uses, I recommend getting 'The PDR pocket guide to prescription drugs' and 'Pearson Nurse's Drug Guide' or 'Prentice Hall Nurse's Drug Guide'
