Flight Traveling - how do you carry prep items

Hi,

Im still a newbie prepper and was wondering how do I stay prepared while traveling.

I will be traveling for vacation in december and was wondering what I can and can't bring as a prepper especially since I'll be on a cruise to Caribbean islands flying out Dallas to Miami. Porting from Miami.

I've checked TSA but feel like if a ER situation came up I'll be left feeling half prepared with my EDC carry on bag on the cruise.

The problem is that yes, your screwed on a cruise ship. On board their ship they are the law and they don't allow any weapons of any kind. No pepper spray No tazers No knives No to anything that can be used in a protection aspect. The best that I can offer is to bring a cane that is designed for self defense and keep it with you. When you come into a port area find out what weapons are legal there. If you can get at least pepper spray your in a good position to attempt self defense.

With so much uncertainty today the wife and I don't really travel anymore, Lisa heads up north from time to time but she is in good hands when up there, we pretty much stay in the state. My rule today, if I can't take my firearm I don't go.

Each TSA agent works differently at DFW. On my last trip going out of Terminal C, I was literally taken behind the curtains and given the royal treatment....okay Roninsensei and Maverick...don't laugh, but the TSA agent was new and because I caused the alarm to go off when I passed through the detector, they had to use the wand. When they got down to the ankle, they literally strip searched me, despite me telling them that I still had a fragment of metal lodged into the lower ankle from Afghanistan.

My wife also told me on her return from her business trip last week, TSA was really focused on their jobs with the recent scare. So as Roninsensei advised a cane is a good standoff weapon. Also know you can make things like a paper baton using tape and a tightly wrapped magazine...its not rocket science work...but simple. I will have to take a look around this weekend and see if I can find that PDF on home-made weapons using household items.

If I am travelling to only one place for more than a week or so I often send myself a parcel via UPS etc of essential gear to the hotel for them to hold until I arrive.

Oddly enough, I have a stun gun that looks like a cell phone, and I've gotten it through checked baggage every time without fail, ships or planes. (X-ray expects to see electronics in a cell phone). First time, was purely by accident, but since then, always have.

I've read of Stun guns and 22 LR guns made into cell phones, I only wish to god they were available over here.

Well now that the defensive aspect has been covered, there's a lot more to prepping when travelling abroad. I travel a lot, mostly road trips here in the States, but overseas to Europe as well, and a yearly Vegas adventure. I know if the big one happens during one of my travels I'm up that creek without a paddle, well I'll just float downstream then! You can still have a 72hr bag ready in your packed luggage, true it isn't with you during the flight, but are you gonna bugout in the air? Having your wits about you is your best bet. Even on a carry on bag, you can have a few necessities- water, food, some cord, first aid kit, bring a packable waterproof jacket, extra socks, a contractor trashbag, a lighter. How about a good map of where your travelling to, compass, flashlight, batteries. Knives and other stuff can go in luggage, sure you don't have them immediately but you will get your luggage eventually. Always travel wearing sturdy walking shoes and socks, a strong leather belt. Have some knowledge of the language where you are going, topography, what is edible, location of American embassies or bases. You may have live away from your home for awhile. Remember, what you know and your experiences will always be with you. Also, if you stay landlocked to the US, you can always walk back, sure it'll take awhile but it can be done.

It's a good point about knowing where the Embassies are. Another tip is to always have a copy of your passport stashed somewhere.

heck....i get detained in every airport in every country I go to. I don't even set off the alarms.they just pull me out, call the soldiers ,take me to the interagatio quarters,strip me down, and ask me a million times, why have I came to their country. Usually after a few hours my wife rescues me.

Yikes, and I thought I was bad.
Because I flew around a lot in the Middle East (as a kid, like 30 years ago), I get a security search about every other flight. I just love seeing that SSS on my boarding pass......
