trouble with the flu vaccines is they usually get the strain of the disease wrong, they make these vaccines based on some vague notion of what "might" be about or they base it on last winters strain, both of which are usually wrong, this years flu is a different strain and the vaccine dosent work on it, so whats the point in having it?

The vaccines can work, despite not being an exact match.

As an example, consider smallpox. The first truly effective "vaccine" (discovered by Edward Jenner) was a different disease called cowpox. Cowpox was a mild disease of the hands and feet, and people generally recover in a few days with no problems. They were left immune to smallpox as a side effect, as the diseases were so similar that the human immune system couldn't tell the difference.

Even if the strain of flu that you're vaccinated against is slightly different from what's circulating, you can have partial immunity.....which can make the difference between a day in bed with chicken soup and a stay in intensive care in the hospital.

Everyone is dismissive about how dangerous the flu can actually be.

If you ever watched "Awakenings", which was a great movie with Robin Williams playing a doctor in charge of a ward of cataleptic people who couldn't move or interact with the world......these people were survivors of the 1918 flu epidemic. It was based on a true story.

My point is that the flu can cause you to get Parkinson's Disease later in life.

There are even a bunch of medical historians who argue that Adolf Hitler was a crazy, paranoid megalomanic because he had flu when he was younger, and it damaged his brain in certian ways.

I always get the vaccine.

It makes my wife happier. That is enough for me. She worked 20 plus years at a major hospital. I get poked for everything.

Even if it's not the exact same strain, it is a very similar virus. The more similar, the more immunity your body may develop. But even when there's not a perfect match between the four flu strains in the vaccine and the exact one you're exposed to, the body's familiarity with the others will help it fight the one you catch. I have gotten the flu a few times, and when I did not get the vaccine it was far worse than the times I had gotten it.

100% agree. I work in the medical field, so I know you're correct.

the only times I got flu was when I had the vaccination, in the 6 or so years I have declined the flu *** I haven't had flu, coincidence or what? maybe i'm just careful or maybe its because I stay away from large gatherings most of the time but more so during flu season.

just happened to watch a documentary about the Spanish flu 1918,which killed by highest estimates up to 100 million people world wide,
next time if something like this would / will happen,it will spread faster, but thx for our modern medicine,there is a chance of reacting faster too.
in the same docu they also explained why it killed so many young,healthy people and it was due to an agressive response from our
own bodys defence mechanism,it simply went into overdrive and attacked all and everything in the body.
for this we have now anti-virals,which they didn't have back then...BUT;

still they predicted that the worst case scenario this time could be a fatality rate of 1% world wide, 1% seems extremly low,but you all do the math ;
1% of the total population of this world and we come up to substantial quantity of dead.

I have always been told that the 1918 flu was brought back from the front by returning soldiers who were in the trenches, malnourished and in bad health anyway, they took it home and there were a lot of slums and overcrowding, very unsanitary conditions in Britain at that time.

they might have done that,but,this is the big but,those killed after that initial onslaught of the flu were mainly healthy,young and in their prime.
I'm only writning what I heard and saw in that documentary.

well , soldiers would be young and in their prime wouldn't they?
any disease now will spread quickly because of our rapid transport systems and will spread quickly through cities because of the numbers involved and close proximity to each other, I haven't ridden on public transport for many years due to a certain flu advert.

When the plague swept through Europe. Poland stopped all immigrants from coming into the country. They were the only country not devastated.

It's amazing how having open borders has allowed the spread of virus and disease that had been eradicated in the U.S. California is a Petri dish.

Proper sanitation is the number one cause of these outbreaks. Third worlders have few choices of sources of drinking water but can be taught how to boil before using etc. Proper disposal of feces is teachable too.

California and Baltimore, etc have certain parts that have reverted to these third world practices and we a reaping the results.

A flu like epidemic is very possible in these conditions. It would spread through the camps first then hit the general population.

Wifey has never and will not get a flu shot. Never have and never will. He said she has never had the flu so she will not even risk the shot.

In my case, I am diabetic so I always get the shot as I don't want to risk it. So, in my household we have one who gets the flu shot and another who does not.

A strong fence and armed guards at the border can also prevent much of this. It's not the US's job or responsibility to teach everyone in the world to not pee and drink out of the same bucket. Charity is not the job of our country. There is plenty of charities to do such things, and there's plenty of funding through voluntary donations. But that does not mean those people will accept the information or change their ways.

nope Texas,they will not, had co-worker at my previous job,who made a few tours with UN in Africa,some peace-keeping stuff, and he told me when they helped the locals with the water situation, they ( UN ) drilled a well and put up a well pump for them,just to show how it's done, 1 year later when they went back to check
for progress,guess what they saw??
all parts for the pump,rusted and gone to ***** on the pallet they were delivered to them, drill broken and parts missing ( sold to someone ), when they asked why haven't you done anything,you everything here needed for fresh,clean water??
the answer was,we don't wanna work,you should do it, so they sat on their lazy blck ***** and drank shyt water rather than work a few days...

Mis-wrote that, changing 'country' to 'govt' makes a difference.

Amen! This story has been told a thousand ways including in the Bible. Knock the dirt off your shoes and walk away. And take all the stuff back with you. And as you're carrying the last items away, let them know that nobody will ever be returning to help them again. Illness, starvation, war, whatever. If they won't help themselves in the little things, no reason to help them with bigger things. And when then are dying, weak, fading... someone will come in & finish them off and do something productive with that part of the world. Now that may sound harsh. But as a last statement, I would add "You now have a choice, and it's going to be a hard path because you'll be doing it alone. Either you get busy and make your society into something productive, or my comments above will come true. Decide and take the appropriate actions. Good luck." And leave it at that.
