You're 100% correct about child labor!! The child lived, I'm not totally sure what he thought he was accomplishing by rolling across the plastic.

Where did you find the Hican trees? I'd like to try themMaking plans to fill the space as much as possible. I don't have a huge place to plant acres and acres of anything so have to make the most of what I have.
I've been pretty discouraged with the gardens this past year. Spring flooding ruined our strawberry crop which I had banked heavily upon. Drought ruined the later crops as I couldn't keep up with the watering sufficiently for good production. We ended our going to the farmers market way early, we just didn't have it to sell. But I don't wanna quit.
We've talked about moving further south but I don't know if that's gonna happen so I'm just gonna plant like we'll be here. If we move, somebody will get the producing gardens and they can do what they want with them. If we don't, we'll just do like always, plant, grow, harvest, sell and/or preserve.
We're also of a religious persuasion that causes us to wonder if the world as we know it is going to last much longer. But it seems like every year that rolls around, we've said or heard that "it can't possibly go on another year", but yet here we are. So I'm gonna plan and plant like we'll be here. (That's actually difficult for me to wrap my brain around as I do not like wasting time or effort on things that don't matter. Only problem is, I don't know what will or won't matter if I can't see the future. And prophecies, at least that I'm aware of, don't give a date and time.) I'm even thinking I'll plant some more fruit trees... that take several years to bear fruit. Several varieties of apples I don't have that I think I'd like to have, maybe a few more peach trees. And there is a "hican" tree (hickory crossed with pecan) that's supposed to do well in this growing zone, I may get a few of those. I have a perfect spot for them.

Thanks Poppins. I love Starks. My fruit trees all came from themSaw them on Stark Bros. website a few days ago.
Wait. You got married??!!!Need to find a place for the new garden since last years became the chicken new run Trying to convince Hubby that this one needs to be bigger than the other one too lol Also need to start scouting a location for citrus and fruit trees. I don't think he fully understood the scope of what I meant about building a homestead when he married me. He's a saint though and takes it all in stride
Thank you! Yes, we got married before Thanksgiving. You didn't miss it, I hadn’t said anything on here yet lol I've mostly been lurking because of how busy life has been.Wait. You got married??!!!
Congratulations!!! I missed that one. How long has it been? So happy for you!!

Thank you! We're old enough that we didn't feel the need to lallygag around before taking the next steps.I know you mentioned a new guy a while back!! Congratulations!! Glad to see you around, don't be a stranger!!
That’s funny. That’s also a warning. I didn’t know squirrels would go after garlic.I wasn't going to plant a "winter garden" this year (at least) but gave in & I did plant some garlic. Now we are projected to get cold as hell so I moved my small planter inside. Since I've never done a winter garden & never planted garlic before I figured that snow on top of it probably was a BAD thing. The planter is sitting behind me as I type this. We will wait & see if anything grows or not.
On a lighter side a squirrel it would seem likes garlic & dug up one of the ones I planted. I told my wife we are going to get that sucker. I'll hold them down one by one & you smell their breath!
I plant my garlic the end of Sept every year. It freaks me out seeing it grow in the snow. Daughter was a preemie and born in the spring. We had frequent drives to Minot, N.D. about 100 miles for her to see specialists that following year. In the morning we would see the sunflowers in the fields pointed east and when we came home later in the day, those sunflowers would have turned, following the sun. It was so interesting.“What are your plans for the coming year in your garden?"
Since you asked… I gave it some thought. I’m thinking I’ll plant Sunflowers. Why? They’re easy grow, and when they no longer point towards the sun… it’s time to run for the hills.
Edit: Forgive the NPR link, but it came up first in a search looking for info about such things and it’s good info, for those interested in such phenomena….

There were many years that I ate an avocado a day during the avocado season. I kept a pot of dirt on my wide kitchen window space and just stuck the pits in there. Many of them sprouted and grew. Someone told me that that is not how you are supposed to sprout avocados. Do you suppose that all the years before there were avocado orchards that someone somewhere was putting toothpicks in the pits and suspending them in water? Nope!..Uh, that would be 'Lord of the Buds', Sir Hashbrown's thread... I'm... 'Not really Worthy'...
Welp.. Right Now, all we've got goin is some Green Onions (not particularly sexxy But here's some (and Cilantro..) gleaned from the 'Counter-planters' awhile back...
..and, though I don't usually take many 'Kitchen-grow selfies', have-snapped a few to send to Sonny-boy, there.. ie: Gingy-scraps..
..and, not "Kitchen-grown", but last time I did 'Bucket-taters'..
(..that was just from ~2-3 'eyes'.. IIRC, total yield was ~12 or so that grow.. Super-easy.. And, here's some Older snaps, with a Romaine re-sprout, and an Avo-pit that Really took off..
..Sadly, we had to leave that Beaut back in Cali (and, One-move / House Previous to our just-before-the-AZ-move, so... AFAIK, it's Still there / growing, but.. Haven't been able to get back there / see If it's still Up / growing.. Ah well..
So, yanno.. Not pretending we're 'Growing All our Groceries' (like my Son nearly-is.. but.. It's the 'Proof of Concept', that I've pleased to see be 'relatively-easy' over and over.. (especially Taters, Carrots, Lettuces / Basil, etc) It's getting a Garden(s) to the Size, Consistency, and Longevity to 'make a difference for SHTF-purposes' that's the Challenge, but.. I'm certainly Gonna Try..
..But Hey, Folks! Guess What?! I got some GREAT NEWS this past week! NOW, ya can get Rid of Aaaaaall those nastly, stinky, pesky Chickens! (well, at least just de-head 'em / pluck / boil / blenderize, and Freeze for their Meat, but.. for Eggs?? Pfff, LOL!! Why - there's No Need for That shugar anymore, cuz the 'Eco-Wizards' up in the WEF / NWO-cartel have Blessed us with....
..and ONLY $7.99 for a whole 16 oz - We're SAVED!!
I.. just can't Even with these Zommies, Omg.. Anyhoo, back to Reality... That is all, Carry on...

That would be some tedious work, lol!!There were many years that I ate an avocado a day during the avocado season. I gave amaryllis bulbs to some of my clients for Christmas this year. They seemed very excited to get them. I have 4 and love them.Dw bought me ten Amaryllis in pots on sale for $2.40 each.
Six have bloom buds & one is opening up.
I thought I'd just put them in dirt, as one of my experiments. I had previously tried the toothpick thing and had little luck with that. That would be some tedious work, lol!!
Our olive tree put out a few suckers.

I pruned one of them and got six cuttings.

They are under a dome on a heat mat.
I left the other suckers on the olive tree as insurance if the cuttings don't take. So now I just have to wait a year to see how they do.
Ben
I need to do that too, I always have avocados! I would have to find a place where my cats wouldn't enjoy the dirt!!I thought I'd just put them in dirt, as one of my experiments. I had previously tried the toothpick thing and had little luck with that.
The Princess picks them out for practical reasons. I just try to keep them alive.Neb, very cool!! I've never explored growing an olive tree. I have a lemon tree in the greenhouse with a few lemons on it. I had a coffee tree but I think I killed it. I have a fig tree that was started with a single leaf that's doing great. Have wondered about an avocado tree. But never really thought about an olive tree.
Step-son used to live in Scottsdale, AZ and I remember of walking around his neighborhood seeing lots of orange, lemon, grapefruit, and occasionally an olive tree.
Not sure the extent of protection it would have to have here in zone 7a, north-central Tennessee, probably similar to the lemon.
So many things to try, so little time.
I have a similar problem, but with mice. They eat seedlings and other tender young greens, inside the house and out in the yard. A golf course fairly close to me had a huge makeover in the last decade and as several neighbors have said, "We all got mice." They have tunneled into the ground. One neighbor found a hole in her yard and put a garden hose in it with water running, and ran the water for about half an hour. Her neighbor said that she got rid of her mice that way.I need to do that too, I always have avocados! I would have to find a place where my cats wouldn't enjoy the dirt!!
