It seems like this weird violent s--- just keeps happening and getting worse.

There's been other weird stuff. An increase in UFO reports, a cosmic near miss with an asteroid that looks like a skull, an increase in mass shootings, an increase in terrorism, I could go on.

I agree that it's happening more and more and more, and I think it will continue to get worse.
I believe there are a few key causes for all of this insanity:

1) Drugs, both legal and illegal
2) Stress on individuals from a failing economy
3) Collapse of the 'family' (father/mother in a single household, providing role models for the children)
4) (anyone that knowingly disagrees with me, stop here) Failure of the church to educate people on the commands of the Bible and failure of people to seek God.

Well, a non-theist could still take this point as a failure of any institution to teach right from wrong, or show the social consequences of bad behavior. It shouldn't require seeking the approval of an imaginary friend to behave though.

I do agree that the collapse of the "traditional" family certainly has a key role in what we've become. (and no, it isn't a gay/straight thing....I just feel TWO parents (whether a mom and dad, two dads, two moms, etc.) balance each other out, and that as long as the two have a healthy relationship that lasts for the duration of the kids' childhood, it works as long as two parents)

But a good portion of blame also has to lie with how different our society has become due to Social Media and the instant access of information (and failure to vet if such info is true or false). This one fundamental change to how we live has had some very serious consequences, both good and bad, but you cannot deny how much this has completely changed the game.

Money stress is certainly a key as well, but this too has changed. Simply put, it's hard for kids just leaving the nest to survive, so they stay at home longer, and as a consequence, are even MORE shocked when trying to make it on their own (but often too proud and stubborn to then realize they could go back to mom and dad with a newfound appreciation, and save up some, lol).

As for drugs, I think the impact and change here is really due more to legal prescribed drugs for mental health. These meds can have unpredictable results, and the entire mental health profession is really nothing more than educated guessing and experimentation. No two minds are alike, and sometimes, these drugs make folks go completely loony tunes....

Come on guys, I put the preface in there to avoid the bickering. For those who don't believe in God, I specifically call out to just stop (and hence ignore that part & these arguments). For those who are believers, it'll make sense. If anyone is offended every time they see the word "God" or "Jesus", stop being a snowflake (nobody has a "right" to live in a pretend bubble according to their unique beliefs, including me).

Gazrok, it sounds like we fundamentally agree. We can fine tune each point, but the umbrella issues of 2 parents, money issues and drugs are devastating to children.

I'll add another piece to it. Imagine what a few generations of this downward spiral will produce. Each generation becoming an order of magnitude worse. Of course I suspect this is a big part of why many of us are preppers: we know society cannot survive a few generations. I don't know that we can handle just 1 more generation.

I think it will still take a couple of generations to completely go down the toilet...but yeah, the key indicators are scary. Why do you think I want to prep? Simple, I seriously doubt I can depend on our kids, or the government our kids create, to help me out when I'm old, so better be able to fend for myself! This is the REAL SHTF threat...our kids, their kids, and their kids' kids!

I liked the movie, but it wasn't really original.

There was a very famous science fiction story by C.M. Kornbluth from the golden age of science fiction called 'The Marching Morons' (this story was originally published in 1951, and made it into the science fiction hall of fame) that explored the exact same ideas that were rehashed in this movie...almost, I would say, to the point of plaigarism.

I saw no mention of Kornbluth's work in the credits of the movie when I replayed the DVD, but it's possible I missed it because I was in a hurry at the time.
