Hello,
mid 40 yr old Carpenter/woodworker looking at getting into living a more rural lifestyle, not sure what that looks like for me yet. A garden, chickens to start? I have been looking at property to build on or buy with a house an hr or so outside of the city. Looking forward to learning from everyone here!

Hello and welcome, tons of information here, excellent place to be. When we first came to Oregon I built a chicken coop and fenced yard, best thing we did for starting our small homestead, eggs are a great source of protein, probably helped us have the strength and energy to do a lot of things to get every thing up and running. We still have the original coop and what a blessing that is in concideration of the present shortage of eggs, not even mentioning their high price, as to having a garden, also an excellent idea considering vegetable costs and availability. It's also good to think of planting fruit trees as well. I highly recommend that if you want to plant peach or apricot trees ask the supplier if there are problems with peach leaf curl in your area, we have that problem in our area and we should have bought trees that were resistant to leaf curl, we ended up learning to treat our trees with Micro-cop, it helps but you have apply it at certain growth periods so that it won't effect the fruit, Micro-cap is copper sulfate based, it can be used safely, however I believe it would be better to buy saplings that are leaf curl resistant to begin with, you really don't want to ingest copper by products.

Hah!

I am just over the gill from Trax farms north of Finleyville. Take the Library line to the end and walk a 1/4 mile.

Welcome to the forum!

Welcome from Paradise, Alaska.

When toured the steel plant there in 57' or 58' was very impressive.

Welcome from western New York State. Pittsburgh is a great city as far as cities go. I don't blame you for wanting to get more rural.

Welcome from W. PA.
Are you going to stay south of the city? I'm an hour north. When I did have to travel to the city, it's definitely easier from this direction.
Hope you get out of Allegheny County so your property taxes go down. Butler County taxes (last I looked) were about 1/2 of Allegheny.

Because of work, I am looking north east of the city. Butler, Armstrong county areas. Looking in the 2-300k range, Looking through the threads I found out about land realtors and going to contact one this week.
Was going to start a thread on this, finding the right property,

Good morning. I hope you can find something great. I love living a rural lifestyle. Looks like you have some great skills that will bring you far in the years to come. I hope you have a great day.

Welcome from rural NE Florida.
My wife has been keeping laying chickens for almost 30 years now. Fresh organic eggs are unmatched by anything you'll find in the store.
Growing your own food is satisfying.
When you start with chickens, be sure to post about it. Many of us here can help with advice.
