The incidence of CJD (Creutzfeldt–Jakob Disease) is only one in one million, so the chances of getting even one resident of the cemetery with CJD is very low. And if there is a modern casket, which is usually the case now, it should be contained for up to centuries.

I see.

Such diseases are, indeed, very rare...but my point (which I didn't clarify earlier, and should have) is that rare diseases become epidemic in disasters. Malaria doesn't exist in the U.S. unless someone contracts it abroad, but the anopheline mosquitoes are alive and well in the U.S., so if things fall apart, it's probably only a matter of time until malaria becomes an epidemic.

Do we need to consider CJD and its variants in the same light? I don't know if I could catch a prion disease from eating deer with chronic wasting disease, but I wouldn't want to chance it.

There's even a school of thought that gives serious credibility to the idea that Alzheimer's is a prion disease...and that horrible condition isn't rare (unfortunately).

Perhaps worrying about such things after SHTF is like worrying about an asteroid strike when we run the numbers...so eating brain tissue shouldn't be a big deal.

I don't know.

I was just throwing the idea out there.

So far CWD hasn't jumped the species barrier, but it doesn't mean it won't. They recommend precautions when handling deer carcasses in CWD prone areas just in case.

But then again, it's not completely settled that prions are responsible for spreading CWD. Some believe it is spread by virus and that prions are just a symptom.

Thank you.

There's a lot out there that's under suspicion for this or that, so where does a person place confidence in what to eat?

As an example, I hear that fish is very healthy because of omega-3, low in saturated fats, and so on.

Then I hear about mercury, and how someone shouldn't eat certian fish more than three times a week...yet a constant diet of red meat leads to heart disease, stroke, diabetes, colon cancer, and so on.

Eating poultry is good because it's low in fat...and then we hear about antibiotics and hormones that cause problems.

A vegetarian diet is healthy...and then we hear that soy causes spikes in estrogen, and grains (and I am sensitive to gluten) can cause all kinds of horrible things...

And so on.

How does one eat post SHTF with a priority toward prevention since hospital and advanced medical care may be at a premium?

Also along with this question is how do we figure risks with food when there are no FDA standards to enforce cleanliness and hygiene?

I have a feeling that if shtf, all our standards will be a lot lower when it comes to food. I recently even stated, jokingly, that I could probably eat kale and turnips in a pinch. I have a feeling that those two things may be considered a delicacy if things get really bad.

Hey guys, I don't have Wi-Fi. I looked at out satellite on garage roof, close to the motion detector, AND the damned wire has been severed. Probably the squirrels again. Therefore, I won't be on often for I few day but will be checking in periodically. Have a great day.
I hate squirrels for this very reason.

First . I HATE HEIGHTS. So I'm on the roof and can't bare the thoughts of trying to get on the ladder to get down. So I carefully go around the house to my husband's window to get him to open a window. He is in bed and just keeps yelling at me.

I'm banging on the window yelling that I am stuck and it took him about 4 minutes to even get out of bed.

I could have been on fire and he wouldn't care. BASTARD.

Oh my splice job didn't work so they are come to fix it tomorrow. Only $125. Worth it not to fall off roof.

We had everything on the list. And yet we would have a break in at least twice a year. The illegals didn’t give a **** if our alarm system went off and police response time to a home alarm is 30 to 40 min min on a good day. We had security film installed and they cut right through it with box cutters. Guess what stopped it all? Not the 6 foot barbwired fence, Not the security and no trespassing signs or security system, not even the security company that patrolled the area, it was me moving my German Shepherds in. Suddenly we haven’t had a break in now in 15 years. The insurance company found out we had them and tried to jack up our rates so we dumped them and went to another. The dogs worked. We stopped paying for monitored security and went with a system that sends us alerts. Dogs are the key to stopping burglars.

Dogs aren’t foolproof but are a great deterrent to most crooks. Anyone that knows animals can get around them but luckily most criminals aren’t that smart and want an easy target.

That's just it. Don't be an easy target. Dogs are great for that. Someone comes up to my house, and the hear my dog banging against the window and the door to get to them. Of course, if he knows him, he's just excited.... But, with a stranger who doesn't know my dog, it's downright terrifying, LOL. I've seen it on many occasions. I just tell them I'll go in, put him out, and then they relax.

Those security screens work very well. I have seen demonstration of an axe used on them. Didn't break. Hunny installs them on a regular basis but they are expensive. We fenced the entire property, have three dogs that are both inside and out which will alert if someone comes (our meter reader won't read our meter unless she gets an escort or the dogs are in) and if that fails, we do have lead around here. A few years ago our neighbors vehicles were all broken into at night. None of ours were. I assume because theirs were easy access since they have no fencing and no dogs.
Fortunately my meter reader reads from the truck , doesn't have to get out.

Since this post is about home security I thought I'd post here. I am researching some door and window alarms, I can't afford paying for security monitoring every month. So... I need inexpensive and something that I may be able to add to, maybe start with windows and door alarms that I can set when not home, then something later I can connect to send me a notice to my phone if I am not at home. Is there any system out there like that? Do I start with simple magnetic alarms then go to another type of system later? I really didn't want to go to the expense of hardwiring. I want a alarm that goes off til for a time, not just go off then stop in seconds. There are a lot of them out there and I am starting to get confused.

Your right, there’s a ton of choices out there now. Just read as many reviews as you can on them. The big box stores carry some stuff on the shelf now too. Years ago I had to get an alarm on my door leading to the pool. It was just a cheap contact alarm that was loud as hell. Simple to peel and stick on the frame and glass. I don’t care much for the alarm companies either. I knew one guy that didn’t know he signed a two year contract with a company. He found out when he tried to sell his house. They demanded the balance on the spot. Crooks.

Yea, it is mind boggling.

Since I used to get money and food by stealing, when I was growing up...
Believe me.

Motion detector lights work. It has to be really appealing to make me keep setting off the light to see if anyone checks on it, or figure out the detection limits.

Fences are useless. I'll go through any fence in seconds. I'm out there (well, not anymore) with bad intentions, I have tools.

Dogs are 100% effective. Size doesn't matter. Post SHTF, maybe people shoot dogs to get stuff, but not now. Dog barks, I leave. I see a dog, I leave because it's gonna bark.

If I set off an alarm, I'm going to back off and see what happens. Time the police response, if any. See who comes out. Take note of numbers of people, versus number of vehicles. Probably something good in there, worth the effort and wait.

Don't leave guns in cars. I've never taken one, but I've found a few.

If a safe can be picked up, consider it gone. If you have a heavy one, and I have time, I'm going to look for a wagon or hand cart. Seriously.

Consider appeasement, but don't count on everyone being cool. We had a guy that left his garage and car unlocked, and once a week we would get a few roaches from under his car floor mat. Did it all summer. Then someone told someone stupid and he broke into the house to steal it all, and got a gun in his face for his troubles. Post SHTF if I'm out stealing food, I would take few cans at the end of the lane and be grateful, but there are some bad, stupid people out there.

What kind of security film do you use?
I used a 12mil 3M clear film on some of my big windows facing the 3 yards we have. Its to protect against baseballs and flying debris from tge mowers. For security in SHTF, i have hurricane style window covers. Remember to silicone epoxy, seal the tint to the frame or it will just break there where it meets the frame.

You have some excellent points.

Point for home security. If you have an electric garage door opener, did you change the factory preset code? It used to be a common joke with overhead (type - not the brand) garage door installers that we would never starve because over half the folks did not change the code and we would just drive by and help our selves. Hint: change the code on the door operator and the remotes (transmitters).
