I'm certain Texas has their stuff together too.
Anywhere down here would be better than up there.
Tell'em to stuff it.

The problem we've had is health insurance. Glo retired from a state/university agency ( IL ST Geological Survey ) and the insurance is so very good it is cost prohibitive for us to move out of IL and get anywhere the same coverage.
A few bucks copay for doctor/specialist visit, good script tier for meds, but the best part is any hospital stay, for any reason, for any length is a max of $400.00. All her surgery, chemo, radiation, and the $3,000 shot after each of her first round of Chemo was totally covered. Only issue was they wouldn't cover my optirectomy.

Multi layers of security around here. Doors always locked. Alarm system. Dogs for advance warning. Handgun always on me, wife prefers to keep a bunch of them loaded and hidden in strategic places for her. Designated "retreat rooms" armed with shotguns/rifles, these rooms have controlled access and controlled firing lanes from our cover position to the door. "Controlled access" meaning that you can only approach the entry door by walking down a one-lane hallway, so we know where you are as you approach, you can't be off to the side of the door hiding. "Controlled firing lanes" meaning that we know where projectiles we fire will be going when shot from our cover position at the doorway/hall - and that will not be into neighbor's houses. Our "cover" is good. Believe it or not, we still have waterbeds. Not many bad guy bullets are going to make it through 7 feet of water and have much oomph left to hurt us too badly. It was more luck than planning that our hallways just happen to "point" out into open fields. But I'll accept this luck. The handguns are not for confronting invaders, they are to cover our escape to a retreat room, where if you dare to enter, well, you dared. We retreated, you assaulted. You made the choice that triggered the final outcome, not me. I have toyed with the idea of putting reinforced frame metal doors on the retreats, but haven't gotten to that yet. Still pondering if it is a good idea. Our retreat rooms are not dictated by the law saying we have to retreat in our own home. It doesn't. They are dictated by the tactical advantage of doing so. IF we are assaulted, we want every possible advantage to be the ones who come out of it well in the end.

An example of what might await you in the retreat:

Being 80 and with the clock ticking ain't all bad, folks. My ethical standards are pretty solid, and I will adhere to them, I hope. The State can punish me for doing right, but not for long.

You think if you moved out of IL that they would stop paying her a retirement payment? No.
Her retirement will follow her.
If the insurance is tied to her retirement, it will follow too.
They try to scrape you off (saving tens of thousands) by trying to convince you that you would have to drop it and get a replacement if you move.
This is false. If you don't believe me, try to get them to say it in writing. They won't.
Ask around.
Also if you're both >65 it's secondary insurance anyway. Medicare is primary.
On a different note, if you have great doctors that are keeping you good shape, maybe think about staying.

Now, back on topic:

Well you crazy little acrobats!

I can't believe I let mine get away!
You are correct! Mythbusters did an episode on that. There is almost nothing left in a bullet after only 2 feet of water.

The problem is finding providers that accept our insurance cpmpany ( Health Alliance )

I have a home security system at my home. It includes cameras, motions detectors and chimes every time a door or window is opened. I also have two small Maltese dogs that bark loudly everytime someone walks by or in our house. I also carry my G19 when I am home and have a Remington 870 Police riot shotgun at my bedside along with a G43 on the nightstand.
I also have the same for our lake house and the same for my business except for the dogs. lol.
And yes, I am one of those that always waits until my garage is all the way down before I enter my house.

We have a dog, all doors locked at all times, lights on outside at night, loaded guns hidden throughout the house, and I carry from the time I'm up until I go to bed. We also live out in the country, which is the BEST crime deterrent of all!
