How much does it cost to Make a Quilt?

I haven't purchased fabric to make a quilt in a long time, but at this price, I won't.

Looks like around $400 for materials and $1200 for labor. Is it a labor of love that you don't really quantify? Kind of like guys working or spending money on vehicles?

Don't forget that you probably need a several thousand $ machine to do it.

My aunt made VERY impressive quilts. Show quality. They're family heirlooms now and besides being on beds, they're hanging on walls. I'd guess her nice ones are valued in the several thousand $ range.

I LOVE my scrap quilts. I think I spent about $25 on the last big one. I made a really nice rag t-shirt quilt for my son. Spent about $10 on flannel and have enough flannel to make a quilt for my sister. Working on one right now...all scraps.

I'm with you about making quilts from scraps, but I once decided that every time I traveled I would buy some fabric for a quilt. I eventually had enough. Now we are talking many years ago, and I have absolutely no idea how much that quilt cost me, but my guess is that it was well less than $50.

As with all things there are several factors to consider.
1. What is the pattern you wish it to made.
2. Whose buying the fabric, ?
3. How big will the quilt be>
Twin size is one price.
Double/ full size is another.
So is queen.
King size is the fourth price.
And California King is the last price.
You have to consider the fabric for the quilt top, batting, and backing all this is in the price.
And you are charged accordingly.
As for fancy machine not necessarily I use a regular sewing/ quilt machine.
4. Do you want hand stitching on your quilt? That's usually extra.
5. Time is another factor.

Quilting was serious business with my grandmother and great grandmother. All stitching was done by hand and my grandmother told me she could never stitch like her mother, even with a lifetime of practice.
You can't put a price on their hand stitched quilts. They took weeks to make. They made one for me, a design called "Tree of Life" by my grandmother, and it's on my bed right now, still good after many decades. The stitching is near invisible.

I go to our local quilt auction in our town each year in August. Depending on how the economy is doing...you can guess on the prices. I've bought some really great deals there the last few years. Sometimes the antique ones are brought in, not just the new ones. Last year I bought a twin gorgeous quilt, appearing to be made in the 50's. In good shape. Paid $150 for it.
