I always love seeing the looks on folks faces when I explain that all eggs are NOT baby chickens, they are really just the food for one. And how a hen will lay whether a rooster around or not....LOL.

The brown eggs I buy in the supermarket do taste different than the white eggs to me. They have a darker and more flavorful yellow. The shells are a lot thicker too. But that's probably because they are free range eggs and the chickens eat better.

Oh boy, I'm sorry robin to need to say this! Different BREEDS of chickens are why you have different colored eggs. Diet makes a slight tint difference, but it's mostly breed-specific. The same hen that is in a cage will lay roughly the same color egg as when she free-ranges. And here's a little secret I heard years and years ago. I can look at a hen and tell you what color her eggs will be, without seeing an egg! How? You won't believe me, but go research and you'll find out it's true. Look at the color of the skin on the inside of the hen's ear and that's the color her eggs will be. Dark skin? Dark egg. White-ish skin? White-ish egg. Blue-ish skin, blue-ish eggs! In all fairness, I don't expect the average person to know this.

I always buy free range eggs from local small producers- people with 3 or 4 chickens in the back yard, no commercial eggs for me.
I sometimes buy Duck eggs which are a favourite of mine.
