Pretty cool article here on a deer that had some genetic "throwback" traits. I find it highly interesting that these recessive traits can persist in a population for so long and only pop up occasionally.

Would you have taken this deer? IDK if I could have brought myself to do it. In the next county over there is a blacktail deer population that throws one or two white babies per generation. It's kind of an unspoken thing that we let those white ones live.
 
That is neat! I've never seen the face stripes before, I'll be on the lookout. I have seen the black stripe under the chin but can't remember when it was, never gave it another thought. Something else to look for... I see a lot of white tails. Now that I know the history I'll be sure to look for them. Thanks for posting about this! :)
 
My Burberry and many of her family members have black on their faces!! Some other of the deer families around here have blonde faces! Their colors are bolder with their winter coats!
