It's deep that's for sure. Many countries hold there Bonds. Usually the Bond holders get paid first..but not when the country goes belly up. Venezuela pumps a LOT of oil. They have Oil Charters (contracts) that are dead in the water if they go bust. That can leave the shipping companies hanging for a lot of money, as well as the buyers. That could lead to a sharp downturn in the Futures market. Can't ship goods in and out of the country. Ships back up in port or can't depart because they are empty. It's a mess for sure.

These people are reacting on the fear that has gripped the country. They have shortages but are not starving...yet. You can't eat cigarettes. The guy breaking into the cash register ?why steal worthless money? Starving people are desperate people and desperate people do desperate things, and starving desperate people with guns will take out a Government no matter who they are. And we wonder why they want to take our guns away before there failed liberal policies of a bankrupt country really take effect.

Yes sir I remember seeing very similar events in New Orleans during H Katrina as hundreds looted tvs, fridges, booze etc then stood around whinging about being burgled and hungry. But then again I remember the most iconic bit of that disaster on TV when a crew interviews Family A who lost everything and they said " With Gods help and our neighbours we can rebuild our homes and communities. Then Family B who said " The government should GIVE us new houses, cars, food, phones and clothing.

"Middle Class" Venezuelans are scrounging for thrown out food behind restaurants and cafes, already. Of course, somebody will bail them out, in order to prevent destabilization of the region or rule by the cartels. Probably us.

I guess that makes sense, China has had their fingers in the pie down there since they were funding the Sendero Luminoso, Maoist rebels, in Peru, 25 years ago.

Here chaps is the TRUE face of AMERICAN Socialism, I bet Hilary would approve.

Just like here in the UK only yesterday when our LABOUR PARTIES socialists joined Bob Geldof on his luxury boat quaffing champagne and eating langustines spent day cruising the River Thames verbally insulting and abusing British hard working decent trawlermen whose lives have been blighted by the EU

Vast economic disparities like that lead inevitably to revolution and/or collapse. Note that the article stated many who are able to are leaving for Columbia, or...ding, ding, ding, the U.S..

Spot on William, and they will overwhelm Columbias social infrastructure before moving on like an unstoppable avalanche. and the do gooders will be their saying " but they are sick ad hungry and homeless we HAVE to take them in. First 10, then a 100, then a 100,000, then a million, then THEIR RELATIVES.

I agree with gaz here, this is a good tool to learn from. I'm not predicting when this country's economy will fall, but it will happen. This will give you a real world idea of how bad it can get. Surprisingly there's not much about it on the news here.

Never has been. Americans could give two sh*ts about Venezuela and the news outlets know it.... I'd wager most Americans have NO idea what is going on there right now. (if they did, they certainly wouldn't be clamoring for Bernie's ideas...)

I remember when talk show hosts would go out and ask people on the streets really easy questions about politics or current events. The average person dosent have a clue. It's gotten so bad now the talk show hosts don't even have a clue!

All I can say....is good for Venezuela...very interesting how they ran their government, it all comes around some times and with oil down, no wonder their economy is faltering.

With South americas natural resources they technically should be richer than the US.

We're just better at financing our corruption here and every g'damn MSM is on the quid quo pro bandwagon, checks and balances is a fancy slogan for blinders! Na, our Government just better at the mafia thing is all. When all said and done, we turn a profit ;)
